The reflection about monsters Monsters, “large, ugly, and frightening imaginary creatures” , are always in stories or books since human started writing down the history. In my opinion, there are two kinds of monster. Some are created by human, and others are created by nature. During the summer, we have read the Frankenstein. And in the book, there is a really ugly monster that was created by Robert Walton who was a really hard-working science learner. He created the monster and abandoned him because his ugly appearance. The most different aspect of the monster in Frankenstein is that he was so kind and full of love. He had tried to love people, to help people, even to join the society. Nevertheless, he failed only because his appearance.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a monster is described as “part animal and part human”, “ferocious”, “ugly”, and “frightening”. Yet at the same time, a monster can be “amazing” and “extraordinary” . From these characteristics alone, a monster can essentially be anything. In the literal sense, a monster is perceived to be large and physically grotesque, however inner qualities of monstrosity can be easily masked, and are therefore often overlooked. Three 19th century novels, Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reveal both physical and mental qualities of monstrosity through the characters and demonstrate how these qualities relate to one another.
What is a monster, really? Is it really a Creature that has three eyes instead of two, with pus seeping out of every crevice in his face and an abnormally large form? Or is it someone with a mind so corrupt it rivals that of Satan? The definition of a monster is very arguable. A monster is typically seen as something inhuman and hideously scary. A human could also be a monster in that they could be extremely wicked or cruel. Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, symbolized a person’s necessity for acceptance by society. Society labels everything as good or bad, right or wrong, rich or poor. Although some of these labels may be correct, many are misconceptions. The monster, needed to be accepted by society, but instead was scorned, attacked, and shunned because of his outward appearance. The treatment of the monster was on the assumption that he was actually a monster. The only justification of this treatment was his outward appearance.
The monster notices that humans are afraid of him because of his appearance, he feels embarrassed of himself, as humans do when they don’t seem to be accepted. The monster is like humans, as mentioned, in the way that he wants someone to listen and care about him. He is discovering the world and his capacities, he seeks knowledge and understand plenty aspects of life by learning how to speak and read. “The gentle manners and beauty of the cottagers greatly endeared them to me; when they were unhappy, I felt depressed; when they rejoiced, I sympathized in their joys” (Shelley 47). What defines a monster? Is it one’s appearance or one’s actions? In today’s society, a monster is often considered evil or inhumane. In Frankenstein, the creation that Victor Frankenstein makes is called the monster, but throughout the book we are shown the compassion of the creature and the monster-like qualities in Frankenstein. Being a sociopath does not always mean being a monster, but in today’s society the two terms often go hand in hand with one another. Included in those seven are three major ones that Victor Frankenstein shows throughout the novel: extreme antisocial attitude and behavior, pattern of irresponsibly, and lack of remorse for actions
When monsters are thought of a very distinct picture comes to mind. An ugly creature that is out for blood, born into a life where causing misery is his driving force. Do these features really define what a monster is; works of literature like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Shakespeare’s Othello tell quite a different story. Monsters are not born but made just as people are not born evil but can sometimes end up there. Othello and the Monster start of as good men looking to be part of society but were pushed out because of what others perceived them to be. In Mary Shelley´s Gothic novel, Frankenstein, the Monster once claimed, “The fallen angel becomes a malignant devil. Yet even that enemy of God and man had friends and associates in his desolation; I am alone.” Frankenstein, since the 1910 film adaptation, has known a series of several adaptations that changed drastically, not only the plot but one of the main characters, the Monster, from stealing its creator´s name to being portrayed as a cold villain. Though, in the original storyline, the biggest threat to society is the creator itself, the one pretending to play as God, Victor Frankenstein. Who is the real monster?” acts as the dominant question throughout the novel “Frankenstein” written by Mary Shelly as the reader explores the protagonist Victor Frankenstein and his nameless creation. As the novel progresses, the reader notices how the relationship between the two characters goes far beyond a neglectful creature and resentful creation, for the two influence the thoughts, actions and emotions of each other. Additionally, the creature’s lack of identity begins to initiate Frankenstein’s shame towards his own identity, revealing the flawed character of Frankenstein and determining the resolution to the question “Who is the true monster? Who is the true catalyst of destruction?” During the novel, the reader is able to identify the creature as the most effective foil for Victor Frankenstein because the creature causes: Frankenstein to view the action of the creature as his own work, the shift between pride and shame in Frankenstein, and his physical appearance demonstrates his purpose to reveal the true character of Victor Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley is noted as a brilliant novelist for writing the unorthodox tale called Frankenstein at only 18, creating one of the earliest examples of science fiction. This spark of a new genre inspired countless pieces in the Gothic-Romantic era of literature; many of these stories are cliche and typically featuring a tall, green, bolts-in-the-neck giant named Frankenstein. It is his depression and dismissal by the public that makes him so malevolent. The main individual who at first acknowledged him as a helpless being who required comprehension was De Lacey, and it was on the grounds that he was visually impaired and in this way, did not pass judgment on the monster by appearances.
