Art is the activity of creating communicating and expressing important ideas or feelings through imagination and originality. In a world of imperfections like ours, humans need arts to survive. Art is a way for people to escape reality and get lost in their own world and fantasies. Arts allow bringing a person’s inner world into the tangible reality. It is a vital part of the society; it improves communication between individuals and provides opportunities for self-expression. Art is a subjective activity, interpreting these creations depends on a person’s own experiences, visionary thoughts, and associations. It evokes memories and nostalgia and triggers one’s emotions and feelings. Art is a therapy since it can improve the physical and mental health of individuals, helps them to work out their conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, control behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness. Some people prefer to see arts as just art. Most of the time, individuals go to therapy because they need somebody to talk to, somebody that will be supportive and understanding, someone that will provide them with good advice and guidance for their lives. Others might think that art therapy isn’t really effective since not everyone is gifted with an artistic talent. In this case the process of healing or feeling better will take more time; first the individual has to learn the desired form of art before starting to use it as a therapy. People may also disagree with the statement of art being therapeutic because art is just for fun and entertainment it can never lead to solutions. Arts may provide a way of self expression but it is not a solution oriented method. According to Naumburg (1966), the process of art therapy is based on one’s fundamental thoughts and feelings that are obtained from the unconscious and often express in images rather than in words. Understanding the techniques of art therapy are based on every individual’s knowledge that whether trained or untrained in art, the individual all have a unconscious ability to project inner thoughts or conflicts into images. In other words, everyone does not have to be a skilled artist to do art therapy; any form of art is acceptable. For example: scribbling on a piece of paper can be art therapy because the act of scribbling transforms the unconscious thought into an image. (Naumburg, 1966).
Art is a way for humans to express creativity and imagination in various mediums of work. Art can come in the forms but are not limited to paintings, sculptures, architecture, statues, dramas, plays, music, and dance. To me, art is something that causes the person observing the artwork to feel a certain emotion such as pain, love, fear, or sadness. Art therapy is a Multi-Functional Psychological therapy that helps the mental mind in connecting things that are disconnected like a patient with alzheimer's where the patient's medial temporal lobe that’s the part of the brain that controls memory. The medial temporal lobe is vital in the brain because that is where the brain recollects the memories and stores them. When you get older the lobe gets weaker in which causes it to disconnect thus causing “memory loss” or dementia. In art therapy we like to cause a visual reconnection of that nerve so in which a patient then can remember more but in a visual stance as in some people like to look at photographs to visually which allows memories to reconnect. These programs are put into place to help anyone with mental issues they are put in place just to help.
Art therapy is said to use “three levels of intervention.” These levels include engaging in the clients senses through the physical manipulation of art materials, using the client’s art as a “symbolic container of their traumatic memories, and “cognitive reflection” guided by the art therapist. In this section of lectures in Introduction to CHHS, Health Care and Rehabilitation were the main topics that were discussed as well as different organizations that worked in this specific section of health and human services. The lectures included: “Psychiatric Nursing”, “Crisis Intervention”, “Medical Yoga Therapy”, “Art Therapy”, “Therapeutic Animals.” Although this may not have been my favorite section overall, this segment did include my new favorite lecture, Art Therapy. A few new terms that were introduced to me during these lectures were: the occupation of an Art therapist, the art spectrum, the domination versus partnership system for collaboration, the BPS pentagon, and the concept that yoga medicine is not the same as a yoga class,

Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. Expressive arts therapy is the use of art modalities, creative process, and aesthetic experience in a therapeutic context. It is a therapy of the imagination (McNiff, 1992). Effective communication is an essential element in therapeutic relationships and, although verbal language is the most conventional means of conveying information, other forms can convey just as much as words. Art is personal; an expression of inner thoughts and desires, affecting the way I not only see the world but myself. In order for a person to grow they must know who they are, their aspirations, the true nature of their thoughts, and their actuality of their persona; the physicality of art has given me this knowledge. With practicing in the arts I am able to grow as a person and I am able to see that growth within me. For with the expression of creativity, comes an outlet, an outlet of the unconscious, forming and showing the reality of the mind. This outlet releases internal emotions and helps me to find tranquility within myself. This state of mind is a supplement for my own personal problems. Also, I am able to create new ideas, ones that help me see the world in a new light. I am able to form a relaxing and mesmerizing state of mind, one that leaves me fascinated with the world around me, along with a deep love for simplicity. Visual arts have truly given me an insight on my own mind and happiness in my life. This is why I full-heartedly believe and practice in the arts, to find peace of mind, not in the world, but in myself.
A lot of people think that art can only go as far as a class in school, but in reality there is art around everyone. Art can be a way of life for some people, and for others it is simply just something they pass every single day. What they do not realize is that art can have benefits in different aspects in their life, in children's lives, and even the world around them.
