Why Become A Veterinarian

Every little kid dreams of growing up and becoming something great; an astronaut, a police officer, a firefighter, etc. Ever since I was little I've always wanted to become a veterinarian. Now to a 7 year old little girl, the idea of a vet was much more along the lines of sitting around petting cute puppies all day. As I got older however, I researched the actual job description and this job still remains my dream job today. I realize that the road to this job is a long one and is going to be difficult, but in the end it’ll pay off. I love animals, and my passion for them is what really motivates me to become a veterinarian. This appeals to me because I really love animals, and getting to help them would be something I would want to do everyday. Vets also diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals. Most veterinarians work in private clinics and hospitals. Others travel to farms, work in laboratories or classrooms, or work for the government. Where a veterinarian works really depends on what type of vet you aim to be or are. There are five basic types of veterinarians; companion animal vets, equine vets, food animal vets, food safety and inspection vets, and research vets. Companion animal vets are the ones that treat pets and work in small animal clinics and hospitals. The equine vets work exclusively with horses, which is actually a very strong business. The food animal vets work with farm cattle, pig, and sheep, the animals that are being raised as food sources. Food safety and inspection vets design and administer animal and public health programs for the prevention and control of diseases transmissible among animals and between animals and people. And lastly research vets work in laborites and conduct research on human and animal health problems. For me personally, I would rather be a companion animal vet that works at clinics. A vet must be compassionate; they must treat animals with kindness and respect, and must be sensitive when dealing with the animal owners. Another quality of a good vet is good communication skills, who must be able to discuss and explain treatment options to animal owners and give instructions to their staff when on the job and working quickly and efficiently. The third good quality of a vet would be their decision making skills; such as the terrible and difficult decision to euthanize an injured or sick animal. This quality goes along with the next quality of a vet, which is problem solving skills to help injured sick animals and to find out what is wrong with them and then treat them effectively. A good veterinarian has lot’s of good qualities about them that they need to have if they want to become a successful veterinarian. I think that I have some of these qualities, but some I think I would have to work on through
