In order for General Grant to command Union forces from City Point, he created a highly efficient communication network. The communication system relied extensively on the use of the electric telegraph. An electric telegraph is a telegraph in which an operator at one station causes words or signs to be made at another station by means of a current of electricity, generated by a battery and transmitted over a wire. Grant’s extensive communication system enabled him to be able to effectively command Union forces over the entire country and gave him a direct line of contact with President Lincoln. Grant received daily reports from four separate armies, numbering a quarter of a million men, and replied with daily directions for their operations
Of particular importance in answering this question will be Mr. Lincoln 's T-Mails: How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War and Mr. Lincoln 's High-tech War, books about Lincoln’s use of the telegraph for war and his leadership. These two sources are important to the research because they not only discuss how Lincoln used the telegraph, but also how this demonstrated his leadership.
Here, as well, the Confederate army was at a disadvantage: They lacked the technological and industrial ability to conduct such a large-scale communication campaign” (Civil War Technology 2). Though these types of innovations changed the way wars are fought they also changed daily life. “Even more important were the technologies that did not specifically have to do with the war, like the railroad and the telegraph. Innovations like these did not just change the way people fought wars–they also changed the way people lived” (1). One other thing, the Union Army had established an entire government office dealing with the telegraph system and had trained many operators. “In 1861, the Union Army established the U.S. Military Telegraph Corps, led by a young railroad man named Andrew Carnegie. The next year alone, the U.S.M.T.C. trained 1,200 operators, strung 4,000 miles of telegraph wire and sent more than a million messages to and from the battlefield” (3). The telegraph was “the way” to communicate before the later invention of the telephone. “Also, there was a telegraph service for people to communicate before the invention of the telephone around 1900” (Dorr 2). It is clear that, the telegraph really helped the North get an edge on the South.

The Balloon Corps and the telegraph led the Union towards a victory against the Confederacy. Newfangled weapons took to the air in the Civil War; for example, Union spies floated above Confederate battle lines in hydrogen-filled balloons. Information would then be sent back to the North giving them an advantage on the plans of the South. The White House telegraph office enabled the president, Abraham Lincoln, to monitor battlefield reports, lead real-time strategy meetings, and deliver orders to his men. Here, as well, the Confederate army was at a disadvantage, for they lacked the technological and industrial ability to conduct such a large scale communication campaign. Over a million messages were sent to and from the battlefield by the Union
Grant had many strategies and tactics in the civil war. For the Battle of Fort Donelson he planned out a ground and river attack which took down down 16,500 soldiers and only lost 3,000. Ulysses forced a draw at The Battle of Shilow. He did this before he was general of the civil war.
