World War one was one of the deadliest conflicts that most of the world was involved in. There were many reasons why Europe went from peace to war so fast. There were many alliances around the world to balance the power of Europe. Some examples were the triple alliance and the Triple Entente. These alliances consisted of Germany, Austro-Hungary, and Italy for the Triple alliance. The Triple Entente consisted of Great Britain, France, and Russia. There are many other reasons why World War 1 happened, many factors that are going to be in this paper that I’m writing. The main one that I believe was the immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
There were many nationalist ideas running around the world. Many new countries were forming in declining and fragmenting empires. Europe was a bomb waiting to be detonated, the only problem is, who’s going to do it. Nationalism was especially high in Serbia. They wanted a bigger nation and wanted to form their own empire. Many countries had minority Groups in their country and the cultures were very different than what nations had. Serbia was going to take Bosnia, but Austria annexed them outright. That spark was later lit when the Black Hand, a terrorist Group in Serbia, wanted independence from their mother country, Austria-Hungary.

The Main Colonizers were Great Britain, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Germany wanted to have Colonies too so they colonized Africa and parts of Indonesia. Imperialism was at its finest after the Franco Prussian War. Great Britain and France feared that Germany would want more Colonies as they didn’t have much at all. Great Britain relied heavily on their colonies for their trade and economy along with France. Germany wanted to expand its empire as it was a fairly new nation to begin with. They were some competition between Great Britain and Germany, for trade and for
Prior to World War I, Britain was the most imperialistic country in the world. The British Empire occupied more than a quarter of the world, which spread over five continents and France controlled most of Africa. Because of this control the rivalry with Germany and Italy had increased, they decided they wanted a colonial empire also.
World War I was caused by several issues between European powers, the first being militarism, or the huge emphasis placed on having large and strong armies and navies. Germany is an example of militarism in WWI because Germany began competing with the British for having the largest navy in the world, as well as developing new weapons like poison gas and submarines, the latter being a great tool in surprise attacks. Militarism was also associated with the Romanticism of war; Europeans wished to fight so that they could become heros. The constant military build ups in several European countries left countries looking for alliances with other strong countries, in the event that war was to break out. Germany, Italy, and Austria created the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente was comprised of Great Britain, France, and
One of the three underlying events that lead to World War I becoming such a big war was alliances. “There were at least 100 countries” according to http://www.history.com fighting a war, and countries had to choose their side. Countries used alliances for extra support. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy were part of Triple Alliance until 1915 when Italy switched sides hurting Austria-Hungar. On the Triple Entente United Kingdom, and France fought together.
World War I was started by alliances with militarism and imperialism as aiding factors. Although, there are many more possible things that could have kept the war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary alliances was most likely the main reason why the war became widespread. This is not to say that having allies is a bad thing, but this goes to show how quickly things can get out of hand when blood is
All these countries wanted to be equal to their neighbors or stay above them. None of them wanted to be surpassed by them in wealth or distinction. England had the idea that they needed to take others colonies. Germany had the idea that in order to “ prove and maintain its newly won position” they needed to take others colonies (Doc B). The national competition helped drive imperialism because of the
Many historians believe that due to the Wilhelmine Era and the expansion of the German nation, led to the outbreak of World War One. During the Bismarck era, Bismarck 's main goal was to keep France isolated and stay in good relations with Austria and Russia so that it would prevent a war. Although Bismarck 's foreign policy was creating cooperation, it did not last very long. The spark of World War one came from the Wilhelmine era, which turned away from everything Bismarck’s foreign policy represented. The expansion of the military scared Europe, the industrialization of the railroad was a suspicion to other countries, and the expansion of domestic supporters led to the alliance of the France, Britain, and Russia known as the Triple Entente.
One of the main reasons that World War 1 was started was because of the alliances made. Such as the Triple Alliance made by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and, Italy. Germany and Austria-Hungary wanted Italy to side with them because they did not want Italy to help Russia. Twenty five years later, in 1907, the Triple Entente Alliance was created
The year is 1914 the war is starting, and tension is rising, everyone knows it is coming, people are taking sides the Axis Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman empire. On the Allies were Russia, Great Britain, United States of America, France, Italy, Serbia, and many more. Alliances were the biggest factor in WW1 because it supported the hatred that these nations already had toward other nations, it pulled small countries into war because their allies are fighting, and it causes more war than nationalism does. Alliances were the major factor of WW1 because it made supported the hatred that countries already had with each other.
World War it happened because a man named Gavrilo Princip from serbia associated with the Black Hand assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary then wanted to go to war with serbia because Princip killed the Archduke. This then bought other countries that had allies to start to fight.
Many tensions were building up throughout Europe. Nationalism, Militarism, and Imperialism are reasons that led to WWI among others. Imperialism is unequally and forcefully taking over another country which is what many countries were doing before WWI. Europeans started taking over small countries just for the resources and power. Nationalism was developed and it created a dedication and devotion between an individual and there country. Individuals began to have pride of their country along with patriotism. This
30% of World War 1 was caused by the countries making alliances. Since Great Britain, France and Russia formed the “Triple Entente”
Great Britain had always been a superior force throughout the colonial world due to the size and strength of its Navy. In the late 1800’s Germany became increasingly jealous of Britain’s global dominance. Germany first tried to convince Britain to align with them but the British attitude of isolationism would not allow for an alliance. So Germany became increasingly antagonistic. They blocked Britain’s attempt to build a railroad from Cape Town to Cairo and tried to be a hindrance to them wherever they could. The people of Germany supported this behavior due to the college professors, authors and other influential people helped William II perpetuate this Nationalistic attitude throughout the nation. When Germany decided to start a naval arms race, attempting to build a stronger navy than Britain, it caused Britain to re-evaluate their stance on alliances. In 1904, France and Britain formed the Entente Cordiale which paved
The immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. He was killed by a man from Serbia. After his assassination, Austria and Serbia were going to war. This spurred many other countries to become involved.
The Balkans are in the eastern Europe and most of Balkans were occupied by the Slavs in while Serbia was the largest state. Their aim was ton united all the states under a Serb leadership. Since Austria-Hungary also had Slavs in their empire, they were concerned that they might unite under. If Serbia was to take over the Balkans then, that would result in Austria-Hungary be broken up. In 1908, there was a revolution in Turkey, the Ottoman empire left that meant that Austria-Hungry takeover Bosnia.
The existence of the multiple alliances and treaties is considered as a major immediate and direct cause to the bringing about of the First World War because it turned a conflict between two countries that could've been easily contained into a full scale world war that involved multiple countries. To fully understand how and why this series of chain events were set into motion, one must know and comprehend all the past alliances, treaties and accords that were created in the past and that in time would bring to the two major European alliances, the Triple Entente and the Triple
