A new learning that I walked away with was that ELLs learn English better when they are older than when they are younger. I always thought ELLs would learn faster and easier when they are younger but when my professor explained that it is because older students are more educated and able to pick up things easier than when they are younger and did not really understand how language work.
For closure I would like to call on students at random and ask them what we learned today, if they cannot answer I will call on another student to help them out with their answer. I will then give a quick preview of what we will learn tomorrow and then connect how we can use this information in our everyday lives
As the weeks went on the student seemed to pick up on and begin to grasp the topics I worked with him on. Specifically the student improved on their identification of when to use the plural form and when to use the singular form.
One of the concepts I learned was evaluating my sources. I never noticed how many articles are written without citing where they received their information from. I also realized most articles and information I found was bias. It noticed the difference in tone between statistical information and opinionated information. The other concept I learned in this module is the business plan.
As a Para, I have to take a class with our ELL students so I can interpret for them in the event they cannot understand something. Although the teacher in this specific class is a great teacher, in my opinion, his communication skills are frightening the kids. Last week the students got the results of the last test and most of the kids did not do well. His speech went on for almost twenty minutes, telling the kids how upsetting it was to have such bad scores when everything is provided to them; that they needed to pay more attention to the class and do their homework, etc.…. during this time his face turned red, and his body language became stiff. He repeated himself over and over again. It was so bad; I wanted to run out of the class
Abstract Aimee Horton and Malcolm Knowles were giants among lifelong learners and had many similarities as well as several contrasts. Their passion was adult learning. Both spent their career passionately facilitating learning for adults while achieving advanced degrees. The two scholars were very similar in their desire that all adults wanted to and could learn. They saw a rapid ever-changing world and the need to adapt to ensure that adult learners was not left behind or taught like children.
Based on concepts from readings, class discussions, content learned in the classroom or other recent experiences, what is your new understanding of the learning event, issue, or situation?
Learning about my interest improved my understanding of hard you have to work to get where you want to be. What I learned about my interest is that it takes a lot of
Looking back at my beliefs before the start of this course, I would have to say I have learned how wrong and misguided I was. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about older adults, however I came to understand that I had much to
I have learned how to ask better questions and to talk to my teachers when I need help or do not understand the concept well. I make sure that I have a relationship with my teachers and introduce myself at the beginning of each semester. Learning how to communicate with my teachers
In the group experiment only two students engage while the other four were left waiting this could have been improved by having either enough supplies so that student could have each participated or have done the experiments in small groups of three and she would only have to divide her supply. If students are not participate less than 50% of the time it is not productive ((Echevarina, Vogt & Scott, 2013) Last I feel that vocabulary terms could have been advance by having the teacher go over out loud with the class the vocabulary term and their meaning to be sure they were understanding of what she was talking about if applicable use visual to explain. Connecting prior knowledge to new material is imperative for the ELL students to connect to the language we are teaching them (Haynes, J. (1998).
What have you learned so far and how does it connect to your classroom experience.
Throughout the semester in this class I have learned many valuable things. Each topic that we learned every week helped me understand the process of human development in a very clear and enlightening way. I believe that every subject that we covered will somehow be able to help me throughout my life and I may not be realizing that it is. This semester, I really enjoyed covering three different topics: nature vs nurture, IQ scores, and the effect that relationships have on development.
One of the most significant lessons that I have learned in class was learning the true meaning of the Declaration of Independence. After sitting through years of long history courses I have never actually read the document. Prior to reading the document, I knew that America wanted to be free from Great Britain. That was all I needed to know. But to be prepared for the class discussion I knew I needed to know more than that. So, I translated the document so that I could understand the document enough to discuss it.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
What I didn’t learn from my highschool class is how to properly set goals. I didn’t know that there was a process and I didn’t realize how helpful it is writing down goals and physically seeing them. I was able to learn S.M.A.R.T goals which helps you structure your goals to a achievable standard. I also learned the different types of goals like long term, short term, and immediate. I learn how important goal setting can be and how it helps you better achieve them.
