Stress is the feeling of dread and anticipation that people feel when they are overly busy and find that they do not have enough time to do the activities that they want, and or need, to do. Some people say that they never get stressed out, but that is entirely untrue. Everyone becomes stressed at some point in his or her life for various reasons, they may just react differently to the stress than those around them. Many people, activities, and ideas in the world can cause stress. School and work and self-imposed standards are all common stressors that affect me the most in my day-to-day life. For me, especially this year, I feel stress of all kinds every day. Why do I feel such high levels of stress? I am overwhelmed with both in school and out of school activities and obligations. School is the primary instigator of stress in my life currently, though, only two classes in particular are causing me stress - calculus and Composition I. Calculus (difficult to understand) causes a lot of stress. In calculus, homework is assigned almost every day, but it is not due until the end of the chapter. Therefore, there are advantages and disadvantages to having a final due date for all assignments. It gives me more than enough time to work through the many problems that are assigned, but it also gives me plenty of time to worry and stress. Entering college as a first year student I knew the work load would be tough but I wasn’t aware of how many different obstacles would be thrown my way. Every week I had an exam. Every week I had a paper or a quiz or something that needed my immediate attention. My body was stunned by the amount of stimuli it was being bombarded with. Saying I was overwhelmed is a gross understatement. That didn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling. I always felt like I never had enough time, like I never had enough energy. I felt as if I was being pulled into several different directions. My body was having a difficult time adjusting and adapting to the changes of work in my new environment. When I got my exams and papers back it didn’t help that the grades that I received were significantly lower than what I was used to. It only added to my stress. I started experiencing frequent migraine headache, I was more susceptible to sickness and I had grown increasingly frustrated and irritable. Pain exhaustion, irritability, and anxiety is what I associated with stress. I realized the correlation between my stress and terrible tensions my body experienced. The more stressed I was the more tension I experienced. I found myself crying very often and feeling like I didn’t know what to do. When I was stressed it forced me to find ways to de-stress myself. My current stress is at a moderate to high level. I just finished my last class for my bachelors last Sunday and as you know, we have just started the Masters in counseling program. I am a bit overwhelmed with the work for this week, but it is coming along. To start out the week I found out by accident that my stepdaughters are being left alone by their biological mother afterschool. I have been their mom for 7 years now. I do not feel they are ready to be left alone as they still get scared at night and have to sleep with a night light. In Colorado, there is no law it is a suggested age of 12 years old. One thing that worries me about this is they have no phone to call for help when they are alone. Another thing is I suspected this and asked them before and they were quick lie. Just a couple weeks ago my husband saw their mother Brandee driving without the girls and he asked them. The told him quickly again they were with her and they was not the truth because I found an email from mom saying she was not going to be home until 4:45 or 5:00 that day. Anyway, I might be paying a visit to their counselor soon to discuss my concerns. Children should not have to lie for anyone and it have to be making them feel extreme guilt.
