Why Do People Study History?

Why is history important? It is both necessary and helpful to the study the context of prior history because it reveals who we are in relation to other people, cultures, and countries. History influences the way people can process information viewed from other races, and cultures, and even speak, “The old saying is, if we don’t know where we came from then we don’t know where we are going.” By studying history we can take what others’ have done and build on it.

You realize how easy it is to often forget that every single new idea, religion and war was a struggle that lasted generations upon generations. History is more than just a page or a story, its our account of the world. That goes to show how short life and history is, you realize that history is always repeating, war after war, peace then war. There are good and bad periods in history and its up to us to learn from them. In a way history is much like a human being it goes through stages, learns about life, and has inner struggles or wars about their ideas and their beliefs.

The importance of our world's history is huge, because it teaches us about our past and how we came to be in the world we live in today. History can help you learn about our ancestor’s origins and cultures.

People can learn a lot of things from the past. As time go though the past gives us a lesson to learn. History is one of the important element that taught and inspire people to do great thing compare to the past. History taught us beliefs, values, and different traditions of a culture, even architecture had an influence by the past project. From the very beginning of architecture, people started to build a little tent using branch and stone. After that people start to build column to support the building. One of the examples that has shown the architecture had learn from the past is the acropolis of Athens and the white house at Washington D.C.

To begin with one of the major reasons that led to Rome’s downfall was a huge decrease in population. According to “Doc 1” the population reached a low point of six thousand people in the Roman Empire. As “Doc 1” states, one reason why the population decreased was because many Romans had no interest in producing and raising children. Another reason from “Doc 1” was that plagues wiped out most of the population. Last but not least the population dropped because of warfare going on and the attempt to defend Rome.

History class in itself has a specific purpose which seems to be frequently forgotten. We learn about violent and horrible events in our past, as well as life- changing and positively impacting ones. From the negative events, we learn what went wrong and how to prevent similar tragedies from happening. From the positive, we gather knowledge and comprehension of the basis of our modern society. We are a self- repairing race, analyzing every flaw and figuring out what caused it. It's an ancient practice, trial and error is human nature.

“I don’t understand why I have to take this class. All that old history stuff has no relevance to my life, and it is a waste of time to fool with it. My life today is more important than the lives of all those dead and boring people.” This remark is said more frequently than we realize. History is a combination of events that created our present and future today. The past it what simply gives our present it’s value. Another way to look at history is it can be compared to our ancestry line. Without our ancestors we wouldn’t have the make-up of genes that we do today. For example, the Columbian exchange is one of the events in history that has really impacted our world. Not only did one change come from the event but a variety including food, plants, animals, goods and knowledge. History also exposes knowledge to us. It is the resource that allows us to better our lives and expand our knowledge. Believe it or not, our life we peruse everyday consist of history. Including languages, we inherited, religions that weren’t just created on the spot, technologies that have been upgraded in the past years, and the clothing we decided to put on our backs everyday that has evolved from different materials to different fittings. The world has evolved in many ways in the past and it continues to evolve.

There is a purpose behind taking history classes. The goal behind learning about history is to learn from it, to not make the same mistakes as the ones who came before, to become as advanced as possible while surpassing ancestors follies. The Chinese government tries to cast aside the knowledge of the Tiananmen Square massacre. If Tiananmen is forgotten… isn’t it more likely to happen again? Slave revolts in the United States of America were caused partially by denying Africans’ human rights and education, the more education these enslaved individuals had access to the more revolts were caused as a response to their enslavement and unfair treatment.

History is such a significant thing in the United Sates, and to our counterparts all over around the world. It has many purposes that help advance us, and it creates a source to learn from what was successful and what was unsuccessful. History in simpler terms is a preservation of thought during a certain period of time, documented by a person. This is why, we have to think about how history has currently been documented and written. Often the source of our history comes from a person on one side, which usually is the more privileged side.

This is a bad cycle that more destructions will occur in the future. History is important because people will realize what mistakes did they made. In addition, it provide people how they can protect the natural environment. Analyzing history is a significant process us to improve for human's and animal's

Fea’s title for his sixth chapter of Why Study History, is “History for a Civil Society”, where he points out that in order to have a more unified society in the present, we should learn from history’s trials and triumphs. Looking at every disagreement in our country, it is based on a cultural difference. For example, gun rights are important to some because they grew up in a household that believed guns represent power, protection, and safety. However, for someone who may have grown up in an area where guns were used violently against them, they will have a very different belief about guns. Fea stands firmly on the belief that “when taught correctly, history will impart the virtues of necessary to end the culture wars, transform our ways

Throughout this course we learned a lot about American history. All the themes the growth and transformation of American government and political ideology, the modernization of the American economy, the emergence of the United States as a global power and the struggles for social and civil rights are important to understanding American history since 1877. One of them that stand out to me to help me know American past is the struggle for social and civil rights. The three examples I will use from this course to explain my theme are agriculture and the “new south, The Civil Rights Movement and The Tumultuous 1960s.

I believe that we study past evils or terrible events to further educate ourselves and to have a better understanding of what took place and what the reasoning behind these events might be.
