Why Do Professional Athletes Get Paid?

While Surgeons study for years and save lives on a daily basis, Professional Athletes practice for years and play a game. Who gets paid more? Athletes do, by a substantial amount. Some may claim that athletes dedicate their whole lives including blood, sweat, and their bodies to their sport. This may be true, but in reality it’s just a game. Athletes bring in millions for just playing a game, and most of them later go bankrupt anyways. There are a lot of other, more important careers that pay less. Surgeons and people who risk their lives, such as firefighters, don’t get paid nearly as much as athletes. It’s unbelievable how many jobs are more important to communities, don’t even make one tenth of what some professional athletes make. Firefighters risk their lives to save others and their average year wage is about $45,000. Many Firefighters even volunteer their time. A General Surgeon makes an average of $360,933 a year. These athletes take millions home for just playing a game. Playing games for life isn’t worth million-dollar wages. Some players make the big bucks without even leaving the bench. Take the NBA for an example. The Golden State Warriors bring in billions because they are a championship basketball team. The Warriors have seventeen guys on their roster. A handful of those seventeen don’t see any playing time. Damian Jones’s job is to come to practice and sit the bench during games and he earns 1.17 million a year doing so. Even the players who do play get paid an outrageous amount of money. The most widely know Warrior player Stephen Curry takes home 34.4 millions for just playing a game he loves. There is no reason he needs that much money. The athlete’s love for the game, not the money, should keep him playing.
