After reading The Poem on the Lisbon Disaster by Voltaire, I developed the analytical question, Why does Voltaire question his faith in the poem? During the 18th century a powerful earthquake struck Portugal and Spain, mostly affecting the prosperous city known as Lisbon. The disaster took the lives of approximately 35,000 people and essentially destroyed every piece of architecture from the medieval period. This disaster caused great pain and led many philosophers, such as Voltaire, to express feelings of doubt towards their faith. This was common in the Age of Enlightenment as individualism became more popular and people began to seek more scientific answers.
