Why I Chose College

When it comes to the topic of attaining a college degree, most will readily agree that it is essential to securing a successful career post-graduation. Whereas some are convinced that a college degree does not guarantee entry into a career in one 's field of study nor does it determine success in one 's career, others maintain that a higher education is, in fact, the way to job security and financial success. What comes into question is whether the investment in a college education is truly worth it or not in order to accomplish a student 's goals of success. I think it could be said for most prospective college students that the reason for going to college is to gain the credentials required for most jobs today. What many of those potential students may not realize is the substantial percentage of graduates who do not acquire a job related to their majors, how much debt they will incur, and just how many students don 't graduate at all for reasons such as an overwhelming workload and a poor work/ life balance.

Choosing to attend college was a difficult choice, my mother is the only person in all of my family to ever attend and graduate college. My father and the rest of my family have all gone into trade work, some of them attending a trade school and some not. While all of my family does well and live a comfortable lifestyle. I have noticed through the years that my mother has always been employed even when others in my family have not and she always seems to have an easier time finding work. This is the main reasons I decided to attend college, with higher education often times comes more job security and stability. Many think college is not worth it, however when I think of college not being worth it, I ask myself what is “it”? Is college not worth the sacrifice, time, or stress? In this case, many are not college material, simply for lacking the amount of effort and self motivation it takes to get through college. I oppose with the statement “For many, College isn’t worth it” because college is worth everything it takes for you to become great in the field you choose to study. Many people are not able or do not have the mindset to get through college, but that do not mean they will never have the mindset. Most people do not work hard under pressure or have great skills at testing or learning at a slow or fast pace. Some people believe that after highschool, since it is required, that going straight into an occupation is better for them. In my opinion, college is a stepping stool for achieving higher education and newer knowledge for the area you decide to infiltrate. I believe the educational world is bias to the brainpower of many people and people of the world is bias to the things they are capable of doing. Therefore, I am confident in stating college is worth it because having a college background ensures you quicker job opportunities, college gives you knowledge to become disciplined and self-motivated, and; college also enhances your communication skills.

In our society today, college is something that one is looked upon to do. Today our society is mostly looked at by our education level rather than who the person truly is. Now society is also looking at this generation for us to know that to succeed, one might set high goals for their self, which means going to college and pursing a degree. On the other hand, there are some people in this world that graduated from high school and have never been to college and are just happy with their life like it is. There are two ways to look at this topic. One is that college is worth the cost and another view is that college is not worth the cost at all. College is worth the cost. Yes, it can be expensive depending on where the high school graduated would like to attend to earn their degree, but education is something that is worth the cost and very valuable and something one will never lose.

College is a very important stepping stool to your future, too your life. Others might say it’s not worth the money, that plenty of people were successful without college, I disagree. Only very small hand full of people make it without a degree.

In the article Colleges Prepare People for Life, author Freeman Hrabowski writes “Yes, colleges prepare people for jobs, but more critically, they prepare people for life.” You often hear in the news about students who are drowning in crippling debt due to their student loans. You hear about people who are struggling to find jobs with their degrees. These facts may lead you to believe that college is not worth your time or your money, however I believe the opposite is true. The college experiences offers you so much more than just education. Going off to college is a pivotal moment in every young adult’s life, it throws them into the real world and forces them to figure their life out and become an actual adult. I believe that we all have different opinions on what type of education we want to have. Although I think everyone should go to college, it isn't always easy finding the money to do so. In that case, going to a college that only focuses on your future career isn't horrible. When a student enters a college course and focuses on one major, but then in the middle of the year, change their major, the teachers and professors will most likely feel very accomplished. I chose to attend Moorpark because the tuition is more affordable for the first two years rather than a 4-year college. I also like the variety of classes the college offers and its clean campus. I decided to take this particular class because I heard a lot of good comments about this course. This is my first year at Moorpark and I have not taken other college classes. I am here because I want and choose to be, I made going to college part of my divorce decree because it is important to me. I am here because I want to learn and recognize the privilege that it is to be able to do so. The only reason I even attended junior College was because I wanted more for my life that did not include endless work in retail or fast food jobs. I got myself through a few units on my own at East Los Angeles Community College. Doubted my ability to learn every step of the way, due to many years of Special education program in the LAUSD system. As a child I was a selective mute; spent my first two years of education not speaking in any classroom setting red flagged me to the teachers. I have much respect Norwich University but school but it is not the right school for me. I wish to live in a college town and have a better campus atmosphere. I was born into a first-generation American working-class family in Northern California. High School education was valued in my family and we were expected to do well, but a college education was considered more of an impractical and expensive path to becoming financially independent. It was not impressed upon me that graduating college would provide me a solid foundation to establish financial security or that college could play a valuable role in the enhancement my character.
