I completed my volunteer hours at Bullard Marks Veterinary center in Fresno. I started shadowing in July and have continued to shadow throughout my first semester in college. Shadowing a veterinarian is a prerequisite for veterinary School and will help me decide what kind of veterinarian I would like to become. Doctor Porter is a private practice veterinarians and has been working as a veterinarian for over fifty years. Her and her staff have taught me many skills that I can apply in the future and I am glad I had the opportunity to learn from them. I shadowed Doctor Porter and the Veterinarian Technicians at Bullard Marks Veterinarian Center for five months. I have learned many skills that will help me with my career goal of becoming veterinarian. Shadowing a veterinarian has helped me gain experiences that will prepare me for the future and help me attain my career goal of becoming a veterinarian. I learned the proper way of restraining animals, how to fill prescriptions, how to give a vaccination, and how to examine an animal for basic medical problems. While shadowing Doctor Porter I watched her perform surgeries which included spay and neuters and on …show more content…
Shadowing Doctor Porter and her staff has taught me that I would prefer to work at an emergency hospital rather than a privately owned vet. I prefer showing the more exciting days rather than the normal day. I find it exciting when an animal comes in needing emergency surgery or not knowing what's wrong with the animal, and trying to diagnose it and find a cure or treatment rather than doing the common vaccination and sprays at vets office. I prefer shadowing the vet with there is more to do at the veterinarian's office. This has lead me to want to shadow a vet at an emergency hospital. I plan on applying the skills I learned from Doctor Porter and using them to apply for a job or internship at a Emergency
“ My first instinct when I see an animal is to say “Hello.” My first instinct when I see a person is to avoid eye contact and hope they will just go away.” I have always wanted to help animals since I was five. I felt that animals can’t help themselves and I could help. The career of a veterinary technician is a gross and rewarding, because of all the different experiences that one will receive on an everyday basis. The research will describe the career of veterinary technician, what is required to become a successful veterinary technician, and the impacts this career has on today 's society.
I am passionate about ensuring animal wellbeing, have a strong aptitude for scientific study (having chosen to study all three sciences; biology, physics and chemistry in high school) and am up to the challenge of dealing with all kinds of creatures, especially farm livestock and horses, companion animals and wildlife in rural and regional communities. The variety of animals I encountered at two local vets and at RDA Australia: a baby brushtail possum, wallaby, red-tailed black cockatoo, lorikeet, rabbit, dogs, cats and horses helped me determine where my interests lie. I am interested in everything from preventative care to psychological analysis and complex surgical procedures with emphasis placed on commitment to farm animal production to address the current shortage of rural veterinarians.
I have also had a small amount of Equine husbandry and surgery assistant as well at Dr. Wendell Baker’s veterinary clinic, most of my experience surgery wise were several castrations, teeth floating, and restraining for x-rays. I have also had a great array of experiences while currently shadowing at the Cy-Fair Animal Hospital with Dr. Diarra Blue and Dr. Michael Lavigne in regards to small animal medicine. I have been exposed to so many situations and learned a very good amount of knowledge about veterinary medicine in general. Honestly I believe that everyone should contribute to society by doing what they love to do. I can honestly say that having a career as a veterinarian will allow me to serve society in the most effective way possible I want to help people by making sure their animals are one-hundred percent healthy, or help society with food safety by making sure livestock are safe and healthy for human consumption of those animals and their respective byproducts, or maybe be a part of maintaining and monitoring the health of certain wildlife for
Through this job I have not only have I learned a lot about medicine and the workings of animal hospitals, I have also learned how much I love this field of
I do not have any experience in health care or veterinary medicine. A hobby that I feel like helped me gain skills that could easily transfer over to helping animals would have to be helping out at my local elementary school with the young children. Children and animals are alike in that they make noise when they want something, love attention, and enjoy being praised when they have done something good. They are different in the fact that children can verbalize with words what they want while animals can only make sounds to try and show you what they want. I have personally first hand seen how much joy and happiness animals can bring to society as the local elementary school has had dogs come in and listen to the students read to them causing the students to not feel any pressure or worry. I heard about Black Hawk College’s Veterinary Sciences program through Black Hawk’s website and word of mouth. Just knowing the basics about taking care of animals and children can really help me succeed. By completing this course, I hope to gain a deeper insight into Veterinary Medicine and helping animals thrive as best as I
After my first year at UND, I took a CNA class and became employed at a nursing home in Menahga, where I am still working. At this job I was able to experience patient care and begin to see the benefits of helping patients improve their lives. In my time after High School I have also had many other valuable experiences. I have been a Camp Counselor at two, 1 ½ week Confirmation Camps for our church. At these camps it was mine, along with other Counselor’s responsibility to teach the younger teens about how we believe as well as demonstrate how to be respectable adults. These camps allowed me to use and develop my leadership skills and also created memories that I will never forget. I have also shadowed a few different Medical Professionals, in order to better understand the world of medicine. Dr. Dan Smith is a General Surgeon who lives and practices very near to where I live. I was able to shadow Dr. Smith for many hours and built a relationship with him. He showed me some aspects of the medical field that I may not have seen elsewhere. My life has been far from typical, but I do believe that each of my experiences has made me both a better person as well as a be
In addition to working full time as a research technician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, I have been trying to gain more clinical experience. I have shadowed a few physician-scientists from my laboratory who are oncologist while they are at clinics. I have also been in contact with a family doctor whom I plan on shadowing every weekend starting in September. Most of the physicians I have shadowed in the past were specialists in their field and I feel it is important to expose to all types of different physicians. Shadowing a family doctor will give me a better idea of what being a primary care provider entails.
My experiences have prepared me to pursue my goal. I have owned and cared for horses all my life. Thus, I have gained useful knowledge regarding them and experience handling them. I furthered my knowledge and experience by job shadowing at an Equine Veterinary Hospital for a total of 108 hours. I assisted veterinarians with exams, treatments, surgeries, and autopsies.
Ever since that first high school class I have focused my educational path in pursuit of becoming a veterinarian. I have volunteered at animal shelters, worked in clinics, shadowed veterinarians and participated in basic science research. Now that I stand at the
My shadowing experience on October 15th was absolutely wonderful. I decided to shadow on the OB unit at Hays Medical Center. I became interested in OB after a shadowing experience I had this summer in Hutchinson. I originally started out with a Nurse Anesthetist that day and ended up in a Labor and Delivery room because the mother wanted an epidural. The Nurse Anesthetist allowed me to stay in the delivery room and watch the birth of the baby.
This is a four-year long program that is often split into two segments: one consisting of physical classes while the other half consists of clinical practicums. Students who partake in clinical practicums gain experience and learn hands-on experiences and how it's really like to be a veterinarian. Those who want to be veterinarians also obtain bachelor degrees in science-related areas. My job host completed the Doctor of Medicine program as well as her Bachelor of Science degree at University of Illinois at
As a veterinarian,
I have been living in the United States and preparing myself to continue my journey in medicine. To this end, shadowing various doctors in the Washington, DC metropolitan area; has introduced me to the American health care system and also enabled me to keep my direct patient care knowledge current.
under the guidance of Dr. Dawn Koetting. I was able to gain hands-on experience in a veterinary clinic and made several observations that have become deciding factors to my career choice. The overall experience that I had at the clinic was extraordinary. The staff was supportive and eager to teach me things about veterinary medicine and what was to come if I were to peruse this career. Dr. Koetting was especially helpful in advising me. She has given me several suggestions as to how to improve my resume for Vet School and the requirements that I need to meet to be accepted. I am very thankful that the staff at this clinic have allowed me to conduct this internship and am appreciative of all the guidance they have given me. I learned so much information in the time that I spent there, and all of it will help me in my future endeavors.
What makes a Veterinarian career or job important? A student who researches the nature of a job, its working conditions, employment facts, the education and training, with the future job potential and earnings will be higher and more intelligent when figuring out a career they want. When doing a job like Veterinarian they are going to meet new people and be ready to learn new things everyday with the help of other people and animals.
