Why I Want To Go To College Application Essay

There are multiple reasons why someone may want to go to college. Whether it’s to pursue their dreams or prove people wrong. I want to go to college because I want to pursue my dream of majoring in mathematics, math is a passion of mine. I can not say fully what I want to do with my life or when I will find out, but I do know that math is something I want to continue studying. Being Hispanic does not give me a good advantage when it comes to colleges, I have to make sure my voice is heard. What is even more complicated is being a first generation college student, my family really can not help because my parents did not go to college. I have to set the example for my younger brother because he is also going to be a first generation college student

Growing up, school was not a major factor in my life. I come from a hard-working, middle-class military family. My mother, a Filipino immigrant, was a homemaker. My father was a 21-year United States Marine veteran. They were my first impression of what I thought my future would be. Being the youngest of four children, I was expected to fall in line behind my siblings when it came to education. I was never pushed to excel in my studies, so I did just enough to get by. As I watched friends escape the grasp of a military town and ascend to their respective colleges, I was left wondering what was next for me. I attended my local community college for a brief period of time. I treated college no different than high school. I

I would like to attend college because I want to be successful in life, I understand it is getting harder to get a job with only a high school diploma and it is sure to get worse. My goals for the future include getting into a college with a good teaching and mathematics program, this could give me a variety of jobs and I was speaking to someone and they told me that people are looking out for women who have a degree in mathematics which will help me to obtain a good paying job.

College comes at you quicker than you could imagine. And with being a junior in high school, college is all you think of. Sometimes the more you think about what you want to do the more stressful it can get. But you have to keep an idea of what career you'll want to pursue. East Tennessee State, Coastal Carolina, and the University of South Carolina offer many programs that would lead you to want to attend their university.

After four years of high school, there is only one goal I have in mind. That goal is to attend college. This is the next big step in my life. All the late nights I stayed up to complete school assignment was for this moment. All my hard work was has lead me to this point in life. College will open a whole new to me. A world where I can meet new people while working to improve my future. Why do I want to attend college though? Well I have three specific reasons for this decision.

More people than ever before are attending college due to the endless opportunities that it provides. Theory 1 supports the idea of the sorting-out process that separates the highly intelligent from the less intelligent. There is a reason why my college counselors always pushed for us to look into liberal arts colleges. With liberal education, you get to experience much more than you think is possible. Not only does one take classes that are specific to their major but they are also required to explore other fields that they might have thought was wrong for them. When it comes to embarking on post secondary education the views of it’s importance and relevance is controversial. In Murray’s Op-Ed piece, “Should The Obama Generation Drop Out”, he believes a college education is unnecessary. I, however disagree with Murray’s notion. College is necessary according to a person’s career choice and it’s requirements.

College students get to analyze other subjects that they may have not shown an interest in before; that will help them construct their career. Getting the necessary skills students need, will assure their success on anything they choose to do. “It is the education which gives a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, and a force in urging them” (Newman, 54). Education gives students a better understanding their own opinions, and judgments; it creates anxiousness in developing them, a fluency in expressing them, and a power in urging them.

Living in America I am given many opportunities to pursue my education such as being surrounded by fantastic colleges and being the first person in my family to graduate high school and attend college.I am determined to have a great profession and make my parents proud. An important short-term goal is attending Mercer University for both undergraduate and graduate school with the most financial aid as possible My parents emigrated from India and came here with nothing. They have suffered through many hardships financially and personally to provide for my sister and I. Due to my dad’s health issues he is forced to retire and stay home. Our expenses solely rely on my mother’s income and the income I receive from my part time job. Since my family’s funds are limited, applying for financial aid is critical in order for me to attend college.

A four-year colleges makes students more intellectually prepared for career and life choices. As demonstrated by a survey taken in 2011 by 2,142 adults it shows that 74% of the people found college valuable to their intellectual growth. In addition, 69% found that it helped them grow and mature as a person and 55% found it beneficial for preparing for the career of their choice (Pew Social…). Not all skills that are vital in life are needed in certain jobs; yet, they are beneficial to obtain for a prosperous life. Likewise, in a 4-year college usually better writing, verbal, and critical thinking skills can be learned more in depth than in a trade school (LaTour).

Occidental College separates itself from other colleges with its diverse student body, liberal arts curriculum, and its global awareness. Personally, I enjoy discussing various topics and Occidental offers a small class size, typical of a liberal arts school, which allows for critical and thought provoking discussion. Also, I can trust that my classes will stimulate my mind, knowing that I can more readily access professors as a resource and collaborate with fellow classmates on numerous notions. A diverse group further allows for greater discussion for unique ideas will be frequently introduced based on the student's experience. Additionally, I firmly believe that the study abroad option offered at Occidental College can help me gain the international experience that is important in becoming a complete world citizen. Asides from its diverse student body and incredible academic options, Occidental College also provides student with access to the culturally vast city of Los Angeles. Tufts’ premium undergraduate education and phenomenal international relations program drove my interest and application to Tufts. I have schooled across five countries and encountered a myriad of classrooms. I learnt that I am most engaged when the professor cares and interacts with the students, Tufts is famous for their invested professors. Tufts’ outstanding international relations program serves a diverse set of minds and encourages the curious to venture into new subterranean passions in this field of study. Additionally, my association with the military alone has not made me a global citizen. After taking courses such as Adult Development and Life Assessment, Ethics and Moral Reasoning and Informal Logic, I have been able reflect on who I am as a global citizen. I have analyzed my life and how I fit into a global society and pinpointed where changes needed to be made. For example, during the Ethics and Moral Reasoning course I realized that people can develop tunnel vision about their own culture, to include myself. The world is made up of multiple cultures, and these cultures shape our morals and ethical beliefs. Through Informal Logic, I can tell when news media is twisting a story for publicity or political gain, rather than stating the facts.
