Why I Want To Go To College Application Essay

As the first in my family to even have the opportunity to go to college, making my parents proud is an important motivation, but I primarily seek a higher education in hopes of someday becoming a successful Foreign Service Officer (FSO). I dream of making an impact on people’s lives by bridging the United States with foreign nations and extending the promise of better opportunity to those in need. However, effectual FSOs must master many abilities, including critical thinking, writing, and cultural adaptability. I believe that going to college would be the most effective way to prepare for the FSO test and career path. In pursuit of a Foreign Service career, I decided to enroll in college as an International Relations major. The schools I researched offered professors with years of relevant experience already under their belts, and by attending college, I would have the opportunity to personally get to know and learn from seasoned veterans. While trying new foods is certainly one way to develop cultural adaptability, there is much more to cultures than just their cuisine. It is far more crucial to try to understand people of different backgrounds when seeking to expand one’s world view. We must recognize that not everyone in the world shares our opinions, and that a degree of conflict is inevitable. Cultural adaptability attributes to our response in the face of conflict, influencing us to assess the situation with logic rather than raw emotion. The school I plan to attend attracts thousands of students from across the world, contributing to a unique community which students can learn from. College would introduce me to a plethora of new people and situations, helping me to grow and develop a clearer world
