Why Is Abortion Wrong

There continues to be a hot debate on abortion. Some people feel that this issue is neither right nor wrong, just simply a “to each his own” idiom. Those who are for abortion, tend to believe a woman has a right to decide what goes in her body and if she is capable of bringing life into this world. On the other side, there is an equal fervent opposition that killing an innocent unborn baby is wrong and unjustly, murder in the first degree of a helpless baby. Not only are they willing to undergo the abortion procedure, are also willing to pay the expensive cost in terminating the potential child. Many believe that abortion is wrong when committing it in a selfish act because of irresponsibility. In this ongoing national debate there comes a fine line between what is humane and what is inhumane. For the most part it is immoral to eliminate an unwanted child because of self-desires, finance, and accidental child conceptions.

From a biblical worldview perspective, abortion is wrong since it is the killing of a human. All humans are created by God and are created in His image. Since God is the creator of humans, He has the authority to set the value of life and not humans. Human life has value not only because God made them in His image but also because God redeemed them through His Son, Jesus Christ. Multiple verses in the New Testament, including John 3:16 and Romans 5:8, state how God loved humans enough to give up His own Son so humans can have a right relationship with Him. Jesus also talks about how humans are valuable to the Father in Matthew 10:31. God values all life and this includes the life of the unborn. In Psalm 139, David praises God for seeing him in His mother’s womb and ordaining all his days. God is the one who forms the baby in the womb. He does so in great detail and care, knitting together each baby in their mother’s womb. God does not start to value a human once they are born, instead, He knows and calls them even when they are in the mother’s womb. As in Jeremiah 1:5 and Isaiah 49:1, God called and set apart these prophets before they were even formed in the womb. Ever since the case of Roe v. Wade in 1973, abortion has been one of the most contentious issues in our society. In some cases people think abortion is murder, in others, it’s reasonable for some cases. Then there are people who use it just to take advantage of it. The legal stance of abortion is a hot topic in today’s society.

I believe that abortion is wrong and it’s a social problem. I think that it is wrong to have an abortion because life begins at conception. Abortion is no different to murder as it is the act of taking a human life. As in California penal code 187 says murder is an unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus with malice. I think the above definition is an easier and less aggressive way to say that abortion is the murdering of a human being. No civilized society should permit any person to intentionally hurt or take the life of another human without any type of punishment, and abortion should not be different.

Abortion is the act of killing a defenseless human. Pregnancy has been regarded as a problem because teens and non teens, especially unmarried, are seen as incapable of providing children with their needs in today’s world, because of this, abortion is chosen. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.

God teaches us that all life is sacred. “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘you shall not kill: and whoever shall be liable for judgment.’ But I say to you that everybody who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment.” (CCC). God tells us that all humans are created equal, including unborn babies, because they too are living humans. Society teaches us that the rights of the unborn are less important than the right of living people. Unborn babies have the same right to life as any living person. God has created humans for goodness and peace. When people go through an abortion, they are being violent, and are showing no goodness and love to God’s children.

Although the Supreme Court ruled abortion to be a basic right, there are still many who contest this decision. Those in favor of abortion, defend their view based on their belief that the government should not hold control over a woman’s right to her body. Yet those against abortion, also known as “pro-life”, claim that a life begins upon the fertilization of an embryo; thus maintaining abortion procedures are murdering innocent children. In this paper, I will argue against his defense of anti-abortion. First, I will show that the fetus is not considered human, so Marquis’ strategy of determining what makes killing wrong in general and applying the same reasoning to the fetus does not work. Next, I will invalidate the argument, Marquis makes, is that abortion actually deprives the fetus’s “future-like-ours.” Because of these invalid premises, I assert that Marquis fails to establish the immorality of abortion.
