Source 2 is an extract from the petition George Gapon hoped to present to Nicholas 11 on the 22nd of January 1905. Over 150,000 people signed the petition and on 22nd January, 1905, Gapon led a large procession of workers to the Winter Palace in order to present the petition. This excerpt presents the dreadful and harsh working conditions and overall standards of living of the working class and their families. In the beginning of the excerpt Gapon refers to Nicholas 11 as the “lord”, and states that he has come “to seek truth and protection from you”. Gapon then moved on to describing to the pain that the workers and families felt in their day to day life as evident in the quote “ “We are impoverished and oppressed, unbearable work is imposed on us, we are despised and not recognised as human beings”. …show more content…

It was this harsh living standard which triggered the lower class in the Russian society to form a petition and protest, in their attempt to be granted rights and better living conditions. As the source continues Gapon then, draws a comparison between the workers and slaves as elucidated in the phrase “We are treated as slaves, who must bear their fate and be silent”. This quote conveys the message that these people were compelled to work, and weren’t given a chance of freedom or opposition to the way they were being treated.
