Most of this movie is fictional. Commodus did not kill his father. He took the throne as a teenager, had a wife, and was very strong and good in battle. He ruled for 13 years, rather than a short period like in the movie. Commodus did not die in the arena either, he died in the bath from being strangled. The producers tried to put a spin on the actual events by putting in a fictual character (Maximus) and adding in fictional events to make it something more of the own rather than just a
An individual on average would fight about three times a year, and for the rest of the time travel with the troop. The troops swore an oath to their master, and traveled from city to city looking for work (Roman Gladiator). The social class of the Gladiators was rather ironic in itself. On one hand they were considered slaves, that's the lowest class in a social structure, but on the other hand, some gained popularity and were looked upon as great warriors and heroes. Some rose to celebrity status in a short time as in the movie when Maximus became a hero to the public eye, worthy of praise of greater importance than even the king himself. In the movie this was a direct result in the downfall of Commodus, but this isn't factual, as Maximus is a fictional character. It just demonstrates the influence the Gladiators had on the public eye, he was the Rockstar of the Roman Empire'.
The movie Gladiator is based on a fictional storyline that takes place during the time of Ancient Rome. After having learned about Ancient Rome and the fashions of that time, I can say that the film Gladiator had both accurate and inaccurate representations of Ancient Roman fashion throughout. Some of the costumes, hair and makeup shown in the movie were accurate, while others were not.
Commodus' ambition begins after he kills his father Emperor Marcus Aurelius because he feels that his father did not love him enough and becomes the Emperor of Rome. Marcus says that Commodus "is not a moral man" and that "he cannot rule". Commodus is the Macbeth character in 'Gladiator' but is still not the main character. The main character in the film is Maximus who resembles Macduff in the film. While still being shown as a great fighter, Commodus is also shown in the film as a bit of a coward, after Maximus wins the war for Rome, Commodus shows up late to the victory celebrations acting as if he wasn’t even aware of a war even existing. Quickly after being crowned as Emperor of Rome, Commodus becomes disliked by the Senate and the people of Rome and seen as a pathetic leader. Commodus uses the ambition to be like his father to create barbaric fights in the Coliseum. "He'll bring them death and they will love him
First, jealousy leads Commodus and Claudius into a Machiavellian nature to achieve greatness. Previous to Marcus Aurelius’ death, he tells maximus that he wants him to become the next emperor of Rome and that he will bring Rome back to a republic. Marcus’ reasoning for this is, “‘Your faults as a son, is my failure as a father’” (Marcus Aurelius). All Commodus wants from his dad is love and for him to accept him for who he is. Marcus has always been praising Maximus over his own son. When Marcus chooses Maximus over his own son to become Rome’s emperor, Commodus becomes enraged. This drove Commodus to become a vicious villain. This also elicits pathos towards Commodus because his own father does not want him. Commodus begins to realize his father will never love him so he suffocates Marcus before he announced Maximus would be emperor so the throne would be passed down to himself. Commodus is jealous of the amount of love Maximus gets from his father and envy’s him. The
The battle did not go well for Spartacus and his men, they fought valiantly but were unable to defeat the Roman army, and in the end, Spartacus lost. The body of Spartacus was never identified and was more than likely placed on display crucified next to the men he led and fought alongside. Despite escaping from slavery and defeating multiple waves of Roman Legions by conquering small towns and villages, using his unconventional tactic, and by training ordinary men to be soldiers by his gladiators, the Roman Empire defeated
Gore, drama, and action. These are what most people pay Hollywood to show them at the screens. The movie gladiator from the year 2000 is no different. The movie gladiator is a movie with contents that does not align itself historically. Rather it is tainted with a bit of historical accuracy resulting it to be more difficult to discern the accuracy of the movie as it is now ambiguous for which part of the movie is unreliable and reliable. Nevertheless, this paper will be contrast the content of the movie with the historical accuracy of some of the event, the people in the plot, and the gladiatorial combat in the movie, proving the lack of historical revelevancy.
First, it is inaccurate that gladiators fight to death. In fact, they fought until they loss and then they recover and fight back again, which all depends on the emperor thumb’s movement, if his thumb is up it means a gladiator can continue fighting and if thumb down means a gladiator should go out and recover to fight back. Second, including animals in the Colosseum was accurate, since the Romans used to put slaves to fight with lions and tigers in the Colossum, and then watch them for fun and gambling. Third, inside the Colosseum, they showed men and women not separated, which is wrong. In reality, they used to separate men and women so that women do not get attacked and injured by angry drunk men. Fourth, in the movie they presented separation in the Colosseum between groups of people, which is correct, since that separation meant to separate people by their wealth. For example, the patricians stay on the top and plebs stay on the
In Gladiator, no more than two years pass during Commodus’ reign. It is true however that Commodus was fascinated by chariot racing, beast hunting, naval battles, and gladiatorial fights; and he also trained himself the skills and fought in the public arena as a secutor. Commodus’ eldest living sister, Lucilla, did plot with a couple of senators to kill him in the first two years of his reign. The movie accurately indicates that she had been married to Marcus’ former co-emperor, Lucius Verus. Lucilla’s son, Lucius Verus, is completely made up, as Lucilla was left with only a daughter who was engaged to Claudius Pompeianus Quintianus.
This shows the viewer that greatness comes not from killing many people, but from ones own consciousness, and beliefs. Maximus has not become a decorated warrior and hero, by just killing people, he has used his own beliefs, and fought for what he believes correct. His fall and rise, allow the reader to see exactly what he believes, and reveals his quest for freedom. Throughout the film, Maximus does not want glory or fame, but only wants revenge and eventual freedom. The film holds this theme and meaning within the scenes themselves, and the viewer does not need any background information.
The film ‘Gladiator’ was released in 2000. A thrilling action film, it was a huge success, scooping five Oscars and earning over $427 million dollars. Sir Ridley Scott- who directed the film-already had many great films to his name, such as ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘American Gangster’, so it was no surprise when this film became one of the highest earners of the year 2000.

In Gladiator, the power hungry emperor’s son, Commodus, condemns a powerful general, Maximus, and his family to death because the elderly emperor wanted Maximus to gain the thrown when he died. Maximus’ family is killed, and he was made into a gladiator who rises to the top to try to eventually get revenge against Commodus for his family’s death. The portrayal of Marcus Aurelius was close to true, except for the fact that he died from natural causes, not from his son suffocating him.

Gladiator is in the manner that the main characters became slaves/gladiators and the aspect of how “freedom” is earned. Maximus on the other hand, was a Roman General that refused to serve for the Roman new emperor, Commodus, who had murdered his father, Marcus Aurelius, in order to obtain control of the Roman Empire. The biggest difference between Gladiator and Spartacus is the manner in which their respective freedom is earned. Gladiators freedom is earned thru defeating Commodus, who sentences Maximus to be executed. The story begins after he escapes his captors and rides off to his farm. This is after he discovers that his family has been murdered by said King/Emperor Commodus. Maximus collapses from exhaustion and is then picked up by slave traders and sold to Proximo, thus leading to his voyage of becoming a Gladiator and his fight against the King. Another difference is that Spartacus is pressured into fighting the best gladiator of the Roman army, upon the conclusion of his training however, he is defeated. Afterward he becomes leader of the Army of Slaves and in an effort to gain the slaves freedom back, he leads them to battle. After being captured, Spartacus ultimately has to fight it out with a slave who is also captured and the winner will be crucified. In Gladiator, Gladiators from all over the Roman
