Why Is Gmo Wrong

Did you know that 80% of the food packages sold in the United States have GMOs in them? Its true! Imagine going to the store simply for a can of beans, or even just a chocolate bar. There may be a good chance that the food product selected contains GMOs.

About eighty percent of packaged food is infiltrated with harmful substances that is being sold to many people and they do not know what they are even consuming and the detrimental effects it has on them. This is known as a Genetically Modified Organism or a GMO. Genetically Modified Organisms are being sold without it being labeled, so people are not completely informed when purchasing or consuming them. GMOs also have unknown effects and causes that come with it. To protect people from GMOs, the US should ban Genetically Modified foods from being produced and grown in America. Another way to help protect people from eating GMOs is to make all foods sold natural and fresh.

Although GMO’s in my opinion are considered bad, there are some benefits to them. One reason is that they are cheap, and affordable. Ingredients grown using GM technology require fewer pesticides, and less water making them cheap. This is very beneficial to those who may live in certain places, where food is hard to come by. GMO’s or Genetically Modified Food is one of the most controversial topics that have been studied and debated for over 40 years. Scientists on both sides of the spectrum claim that these modified foods are safe for consumption, but also some argue that these foods are toxic and very harmful to human life. GMO’s are genetically modified organisms that are created and added in a lab experiment where DNA are extracted from one gene and added to another plant or animal. This allows the genes to mix with the DNA to create a desired product. For example, bigger apples, larger oranges, taller animals, and plants that can survive the changing climate. GMOs are different from organic food and products because chemicals and DNA modification is not needed for these natural stuff.

Gmos can cause very irrevocably damage towards the environment. And they cause a huge risk of food-based allergies towards the humans. Gmos are also not fully tested to be eaten. The pollen spreads the pharmaceutical genes into the gmo foods supply. They have a lack of consumers due to the creation of ethical dilemma. There is a toxin that fights pest is the caused of the allergies to start. But, gmos affect the younger kids more quicker than older people. The AAEM suggest non-gmos diet for every patient.

In the past decade genetically modified foods have been have made a world of stir about whether these foods are beneficial to our society or if they are actually hurtful.There is plenty information that is available to help support both sides of the issue but for every positive thing there is also a negative consequence.With genetically-modified foods being a trendy topic and being like all great debates it has its prons and cons, so it all comes down to whether the good will supercede the bad, or vice versa.

I believe Genetically Modified Organisms are bad because, there is evidence that shows how violent Genetically Modified Organisms can be and how the effects on your body can be negative. Not only are GMOs harmful to humans they affect many other communities. “GMOs are also responsible for killing off bees, bats, butterflies, and other pollinators, whose bodies are unable to handle the onslaught of altered DNA and chemicals that are characteristic of GMO technologies”(Bensen). This shows that GMO is not only an issue for humans but it directly affects the insect and animals communities around the plants. These are living organisms that these plants need for pollination. GMOs and the pesticides used on these crops to fight off the insects and weeds is creating more powerful weeds and insects called “SuperWeeds” and “SuperBugs.” “And this built-in resistance has allowed farmers to indiscriminately spray chemicals like Roundup on their crops without worrying about killing them. But this system is now failing, as the weeds and pests targeted by GMO technologies have mutated and developed resistance to crop chemicals and Bt toxin” (Benson). These chemicals are effective for a short period of time However these chemicals become ineffective, the offspring of the insects can be immune to the chemical. After reading this week’s reading essay Virtue Theory and Genetically Modified Crops by Joshua Colt Gambrel my option on GM Crops have changed completely. When I first heard about GM Crops I thought that no good could from it, and we should not start using them in order to produce food. After reading Joshua Colt article I can see the good that can from using GM Corps. Using GM Crops allowed for the creation of golden rice that has health benefits that can help better the lives of people. At the beginning of the essay the author Joshua Colt on page 622 in our text book says this which I believe to be the main put of the article “ In this article, I hope to provide an answer to the question, are we morally justified in utilizing GM crops?” Which I believe this question asked by Joshua Colt is the main point to his article Virtue Theory and Genetically Modified Crops. Food is crucial to every human being alive. It has become a necessity for every human being. The nutrients and vitamins that we obtain derives from the food that we consume. In fact, it is so crucial that without it, one can simply die in a matter of three weeks at most. It has been scientifically proven that is necessary in order to prolong one’s lifetime. But what if the food being eaten came from virus-infected plants? Or what if there was a corn drought? It could potentially cause a malicious pandemic. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) help reduce the risk that could arise from certain crops. But is the consumption of genetically modified food acceptable within the Catholic Church? With unleavened bread and pure grape wine being eaten and drunk during the Eucharistic event of Mass, and even the sacrifice of sheep during many different offerings throughout the Bible, it seems as if food should be eaten at it’s most purest and organic form. Food should be eaten in it’s purest and most organic form because of the health, environmental, and the moral issues that result from GMOs.

Imagine a farm that produces all sorts of vegetables and fruits. Now imagine a little child about five years old with a food allergy of some sort. She is running out onto that farm wanting to eat a juicy apple but little did she know that this was a farm that produces genetically modified plants. They recently they manipulated all of the apples to have the food she has an allergy to in the apples so that they don't go bad as fast. She is all alone and she sees a perfect apple and she takes a bite and she is having an allergic reaction and she is having a hard time breathing. Her mom comes to find her and sees her struggling to breath on the ground this would be a devastating scenario, So this is why GMO is a No so we can protect people.
