Why People Do Not Vote Essay

Having participation in elections is undoubtedly one of the most integral parts of a democracy and without participation there is not going to be free and fair elections. There are a number of reasons why people do not vote and I will be discussing some of these reasons in this essay including; people not voting because they do not believe in the system or the options within the system, people not having an understanding of the importance of their vote and how civics education would change this, access to voting and polls, the registration system and access on the day of voting, and the impact of making voting compulsory on democracy and participation. The fact that in some states there has often been a larger population of people in that have not voted rather than who have shows this is a serious issue (Echabe 2014). The problem with people not voting is that if you do not vote you will not be adequately represented and typically if you are apart of a large group of similar people who also do not vote your views as a collective will not be represented. I will discuss the importance of participation mainly in relation to New Zealand politics and finally I will analyse the significant issue of young peoples engagement in politics and how this is a significant issue for the system of democracy.
