Teenagers nowadays barely get enough sleep to function on a daily basis. Let alone getting up in the early hours just to go to a place where they get bullied and criticized for the way they act or dress. The least the schools can do is let adolescents get more sleep and time to get their heads on straight. Schools should start later in the day so teenagers can get more sleep and function better. A big reason as to why schools should start later is because teenagers on a daily basis don’t have good mental health. Teens have to deal with getting bullied, having friend problems, relationship issues, and sometimes they even have problems at home. If schools did start later, it would really ensure a much more upbeat setting for all the students including some of the teachers as well. “They also have a lower risk of being in car accidents and have fewer health problems, such as depression, mood changes, and being overweight” (Herrington). Getting more sleep in the mornings would help adolescents function better mentally and might make them a happier individual overall. …show more content…
Starting the day later would allow all students to get enough sleep to focus on their school work. It would really improve their grades and possibly make them more successful in life as they grow up and experience new things. “Research shows that later school start times result in improved academics, behavior, attendance and sleep patterns” (Lawrence). Getting better grades would also improve the way adolescents look at life as a whole. As of 2020, all students must pass keystone tests to graduate. In the end, the better the grades are, the better knowledge they have to pass those pesky Keystone
Starting school later is a good idea .It gives both teachers and students time to sleep which is what they need. The reason why they need more time is because kids need nine and a half hours of sleep. With the current school ti kids are having to wake up earlier to where they only get about seven hours.By starting school later and giving kids more sleep it has been shown to increase testscores of the students
The first reason schools should start later is because teens would do better. Evidence for this is that the AASM says that schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This could help high- and middle schoolers to get better grades in their morning classes if we applied this rule. The second piece of evidence is that this argument isn’t new, other people have been at this for a long time, meaning the dispute isn’t old and the problem has occured to the teens of the past. It’s very difficult for teens to get tired before 11:00 p.m. If we let them got to bed at that time, that means that they would have to sleep in till 7:30 a.m. Schools are starting at 8:00 to 7:50. That doesn’t give them a long time to wake up and get ready for school. (All evidence in this
Making things later will cause inconvenience to students, parents, and school administrations. Waking up later would be good but for other people it may not work out. Like if parents have to go to work early in the morning, then they
For years parents have been fighting with their children, trying to wake them up in time for school. Teenagers seem to want nothing more than just a few more extra hours, or even minutes, of sleep in the morning. And many people claim that teens are just lazy and all they need to do is sleep earlier and it will be much easier for them to get up in the morning. But a better solution may be for school times to simply start later for High School students. Not only will students be gaining more sleep, but that will also help them with school and the other important parts of their lives.
Starting school later can make student's academic performance improve. ”Researchers analyzed data from more than 9,000 students at eight high schools in Minnesota, Colorado, and Wyoming and found that shifting the school day later in the morning resulted in a boost in attendance, test scores, and grades in math, English, science, and social studies.”(Why Schools Should Start Later In The Morning). This is probably due to the fact that students learn better when they are awake. If starting school a few hours later can improve test scores and learning, why not do it? Instead of sleeping in class, students will be learning.
The only reason we would make the start time later is for students to get enough sleep. If we made the daily start time later than we’d have to make the daily end time later, and if we do that then what would we do with after school activities? Also, some people have to take care of younger siblings or cousins. So if they get home later than what will those younger kids do? Some pros of later school start time would be that missing sleep affects learning, memory, motivation, and academic performance. From an article, I read that by delaying the school start time in Lexington, KY, the car crash rate decreased by 16.5%. That’s a huge benefit to delaying the school start time. “A 25 minute delay in school start time resulted in reductions in depressed mood, caffeine use, daytime napping, tardiness to class, and falling asleep in class” (Julie Boergers).
If you start school at a later time, there are some advantages. For instance, you could get a little more sleep than you would if you were starting school at the normal time. Secondly, if you have a morning doctor’s appointment, you could possibly get to school without missing any of it. Also, some would argue that this could help with teens not being able to sleep at night since their internal sleep clocks are messed up. Many students would love
Even though I strongly support school not starting so early, but us kids and teachers have become immune to it. There is a lot of advantages with school starting later in the day. It has so many benefits like so, everybody learns better when they are awake. With them getting more sleep their brains will function a lot better than earlier in the morning. With them getting more sleep academic performances should improve. I also strongly believe it will be fewer absences. With school starting later than 8:30 am in the day they can schedule a lot of things they need to get done out of school that morning. According to Marie Anderson from Demand Media a 2001 study showed that school administrators cited extracurricular activities as a major reason
Researches showed that, “Repeated studies also show that when the school day starts later and teens get more sleep, both grades and standardized test scores go up.” So if the scores are going up and grades are good why wouldn’t we start school later. After all, the EVSC does want us to succeed.
Secondly, school starts at 8:15 an ideal time in my opinion is 9:15. Also having a good night sleep is key to studying and learning and thinking and growth mentally and physically. Furthermore i don’t think anybody gets enough sleep. Because we are teenagers and we stay up for a ridiculous amount of time school should start later. And teachers often don’t like it when people start to fall asleep or don’t pay attention and this is a side effect of not getting enough sleep. So if the
The school day should start later. The reason why I say this is because students have a long time to sleep and focus on work that their educator gives them. They know what their teacher is saying. Also they are most likely to stay up during class time and to know what is going on.
High schools should start later because it would benefit the students. Getting a later start can help the student sleep properly, perform better in class, and have better attendance. Teenagers need to get the appropriate amount of sleep every night in order for them to be better
The school day should start later. Why? because students can get enough sleep and can get ready and eat if school days start later. If school days start later than students will have the sleep they need. Students would be in good moods.
School should start at a later time because it improves attendance. Since most students who miss school miss it because they slept too much, schools need to start at later times. To support this reason, Amy R. Wolfsen, a psychology professor, says, ¨ When students get sufficient sleep, they awake more alert, resulting in an increase in academic performance and a decrease in dropout rates, absenteeism, and disciplinary problems.¨ Since starting school at earlier times are causing absenteeism, we need to start school at a later time. Also, Kelly Smith, a newspaper writer interviewed a high school, which started school at a later time said, ¨Superintendent Rob Metz was principal, he remembers greeting students at 7:15 a.m. who were barely
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Your alarm clock is going off everyone is getting up and you're still tired. This teen stays up every night until 11 o'clock and has to be at school by 8:00. “For this teen to get enough sleep they would have to sleep until 7:30” (Macmillan April 17, 2017). School should start later because of teens, time, and you.
