INTRO: In spite of the fact that the Civil War was a period of racist beliefs and segregation, Newton Knight held solid to what he believed was correct. In his eyes, everyone was equal. He stood firm in beliefs for slaves by gathering and leading a huge rebellious group who were gathering to battle for what they all believed was right. It caused a huge conflict along with the already existing one due to the civil war, but it made a huge impact in the end. The arguments lead to the formation of the Free State of Jones where all slaves got to be distinctly equivalent and free, simply like every other person. Many were happy about this, and many were not. But Newton held strong in his opinions of what he thought was morally right. Even though …show more content…
The fight was between whether whites and blacks should be equal and have the same rights. This lead to Blacks and Whites arguing over rights non stop. The whites thought they should be dominant and the blacks be their slaves, when overall, they were all human and the blacks just wanted to be equal like the whites. Almost all blacks at the time were slaves. Many rebellions were occurring and everyone fought day and night. And then came Newton Knight who was born on November 10, 1830. He was the grandson of one of the largest slave owners in Jones County. Growing up in that area of Mississippi, Newton definitely experienced the use of slavery in many different ways. He saw how harshly they were treated and in his mind, he knew that wasn’t right. He decided to do something about it but he had to figure out how. He knew he could face the death penalty if he refused or disobeyed the law. Later in his life he married Serena Turner. This relationship didn’t last very long due to the fact that Newton fell in love with someone else. This someone else was Rachel who was a former slave of his grandfathers at the time. Serena and Newton never actually divorced but instead, separated. Newton then got married to Rachel. This was illegal at the time, but Knight once explained, you can’t help who you fall in love with. Even though Serena was a slave, it was obvious that it didn’t bother Newton because he thought all were
In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud.
I believe that the main cause of the civil war was the different economies and societies of the United States. I think that this was the most influential cause of the civil war because it divided the United States and further separated the north from the south.
Slavery, as Abraham Lincoln often noted, was the root cause of the Civil War. Tensions over slavery dated back to the contradictory nature of the American Revolution of 1776 that resulted in a republic simultaneously committed to freedom for whites and bondage for blacks (Barney W., p. 61). Within years North and South reached the point at which compromise was not possible. At that time Civil War had been started.
In April 1861, the United States of America went to war. They did not go to war with a foreign power, because of a border dispute, and they did not go to war with the native people because of their hunger for more land. No, this would be a war among themselves, north against south, brother against brother, and in some instances even father against son. In the four long and bloody years that this war lasted more than 600,000 of these brothers, fathers, and sons would die in the many battles. Many people point to slavery as the reason the civil war was fought. Although slavery was one of the key issues, the causes for the war run much deeper. Besides slavery, other issues that were causes of the civil war included the differences in moral value, and the different ways the politicians interpret the constitution. First of all, the most obvious cause of the war was slavery. According to the map in document “An” all slaves and cotton were in the southern states. Slavery had already been abolished in the north years before, and every time a territory was to become a state there was a huge struggle between the pro-slavery south and the northern abolitionist. Each time peace was maintained by way of compromise. In his speech in 1858 Abraham Lincoln foretells the upcoming war by s0aying, “In my opinion, it will not end until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. A house divided against itself cannot stand” (Doc M). So, clearly this difference in
There had been many wonderful misunderstanding between North and South in the years that led up to the Civil War, but the most tragic misunderstanding of all was that neither side realized, until it was too late, that the other side was desperate. Not until the war had actually begun would men see that their rivals really meant to fight? By that time it was too late to do anything but go on fighting. Southerners had been talking secession for many years, and most people in the North had come to look on such talk as a counter in the game of politics.
Case, John Brown 's Raid, and the passage of the fugitive slave act that held
The causes of the Civil War were complex and have been controversial since the country began. Some causes include; states’ rights, economics, and slavery. The most recognizable and popular cause is slavery. The freeing of the slaves was an important moral issue at the time and one of the greatest causes of the civil war. "It was only by carefully avoiding the moral issue involved in slavery that Northerners and Southerners could meet on any common ground." (Goldston, 79). The time came in which our great country would finally address the moral issue of slavery. Although there are many different causes to the American Civil War, the main cause was slavery because other causes are rooted in the issue of slavery.
Part of Lincoln’s election was based around getting slaves equal rights. As mentioned previously, many Southerners did not like the Presidents will the end slavery, which resulted in an aggressive series of events. It was clear many Southerners were upset with Lincoln’s decision, whether it was economically or because they felt whites where inferior to blacks. One of the many statements made against the presidents actions was made by John Sanford which states, “My affection for [the Union] ceased the very moment when the myrmidons of Black Republicanism elevated to the chief magistracy of our country a miserable sectional, whining, canting negro-philist....”. Sanford’s clearly aggravated tone puts into perspective just how irritated many Southerners were at this decision. Not only were they angry, but they actually decided to do something about it, which lead to the first wave of states seceding from the
Regardless that the Civil War was a egregious time period of racist beliefs and segregation, Newton Knight held solid to what he believed was morally correct. In his eyes, everyone stood equal. He held true to his beliefs for slaves by gathering and leading an immense rebellious group who were gathering to fight for what they all believed was right. It caused an enormous conflict along with the already existing one due to the civil war, but it made an everlasting impact towards the end. The arguments lead to the formation of the Free State of Jones where all slaves got to be distinctly equivalent and free, simply like every other person. Many were thrilled about this, and many were not. But Newton held strong in his opinions of what he thought
The civil war was one the bloodiest American war in history. Both sides fought to protect what they thought was right. The north wanted the abolishment of slavery and create equality throughout the whole United States, the south though the opposite. Slavery was the main point of the war and why it started. Now since the north won the war and slavery was abolished over the U.S. there should be no monuments or symbols commemorating and glorifying people who fought for slavery. I have four points on how these statues and symbols should be removed.
The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in American history. So many lives were lost in battle in this war any many were severely harmed. Many believe that the war was fought over the expansion of slavery to the West. This is true, however, it is not the only reason the Civil War took place. Missouri wanted to enter as a slave state and many people were worried that this was going to alter the balance of the Senate (“Political Issues Leading to Civil War”, 2015). The court decision in the Dred Scott case caused an up-roar in the states and contributed to the reasoning behind the Civil War. It was said that “once you’re a slave, you are property, and you have no rights”
The American Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865, with the North and South unable to reconcile their differences peacefully, it turned to violence and bloodshed. It tested American principles and fundamentals, spurring from sectionalism, or the allegiance to one's region as opposed to the whole country. Due to the distinct political, economic, and social systems of the North and South, each was unable to obtain its objectives, leading to a war which resulted in conservation of the Union and an end to slavery.
Generally, it is thought to be the South’s fault for causing the Civil War. Contrary to popular belief, the Civil War was mainly provoked by the North; through using the federal government to overtake the South, removing slavery which would destroy Southern economy, and creating the moral issue of slavery. The North was the primary reason for the start of a war that ripped our country apart.
This essay will deal with the causes, events and consequences of the American Civil War which happened in the second half of the 19th century (1861 – 1865). I will argue the fact how the War meant a turning point of American democracy and its social structures, since many years, even decades after the War's ending, the society was still very far away from being able to denote itself as 'modern' or 'racially equal'. The War, and especially the concept of slavery and its emancipation, as one of the most significant events in both American and world history has been used as a common motif in literature and cinematography, therefore I will enumerate and shortly describe the modern adaptations of the period related to the War.
Throughout history many civil wars occurred for many reasons, The U.S. Civil war were caused by the events in 1850s .
