Why would people pay kids for something that they have to do? The Oklahoma Statutes Title 70 Section 10-105 states, “Children between the ages of five and eighteen years old must attend school.” (Oklahoma Compulsory Edu. Laws). If the parent, or guardian fails to enroll or bring their child to school, they will be trialed with a misdemeanor and will be fined. It is a shame that the law has to be cited in this essay. Levin’s eighth grade class of 1999 made the highest test scores of any of the schools in the Bronx and fifth highest in New York City (Tough 49-50). Attitude adjustment can make a huge difference in youths’ lives. Their grades are up to themselves. If they just want to do the routine day-to-day thing so be it. Adults cannot keep taking responsibility for every action of their child. That is a part of growing up, taking responsibility for yourself. Students are responsible for their grades, studying, and paying attention in class. They should not be paid for that responsibility. There are things in life that people have to do, like cleaning the house for example. As an adult, people do not get paid for cleaning their own house. So should students should not be paid for their own responsibilities either. Kids need to understand the difference between a job and a responsibility. The difference is people get paid for a job, and they don’t get paid for a responsibility. If society starts paying kids to go to school like it is a job they won’t know the true meaning of responsibility. Responsibility cannot be treated as if it is a job or responsibility will cease to exist. Not literally of course, but eventually a good
