The Wife of Bath begins her prologue by defending the concept of marriage and quoting from the Bible. As opposed to the Miller’s illustration of a wife’s role, the Wife of Bath reiterates openly within the introduction that she possessed authority and control within each of her five marriages. She does not consider herself the property of any male (Reisman 2010). As the Wife of Bath proceeds with her tale, it is conveyed that King Arthur’s queen is awarded the authority to determine the ultimate ruling in regards to the knight currently held at trial. The queen’s immediate power to make decisions swiftly contradicts the alleged norm of the Middle Ages; however, it could be argued that her hierarchy may have influenced this. Continuing forward with the tale, the knight learns what women crave most: the desire to be in charge. The knight thereafter weds the repulsive, old hag that ultimately spared his life and allows her to make the ruling on whether she is to be unpleasant and devoted or appealing and untrue. By agreeing to give the woman control of the marriage, she becomes both beautiful and loyal to the knight (Chaucer
The wife of baths tale takes place during a pilgrimage in the mid-14()0s, during such a time when not all women were ladies but being polite, noble and kind was fundamental at the time of this stories portrayment. Her many men she's wedded has given her a seasoning of knowledge that can't be learned from
The Wife of Bath’s Tale is a story about a young maiden, who was taken by force by a knight. The knight is challenged to find an answer to a simple question or be put to death. He avoids this by promising to do whatever the old lady wanted, if she gave him the answer. The knight is rewarded instead of getting the punishment.
In the beginning of the prologue, the Wife of Bath implements herself as an authority of marriage because she has been married five times. She is justifying her experiences against biblical authority, and interprets scripture in her own distinct way. Given the time period in which this narrative is being told, the biblical references that she uses were necessary in providing a valid argument. Women did not have much say in that time; therefore, anything they said did not interest the public. She uses those biblical references to make her points interesting, to make people pay attention to what she has to say, even if her references are not all plausible. The genre leans more towards a confessional, but the problem is that she defends her sinful
“I have had five husbands at the church door- if I may have been legally married so often; and all were worthy men in their different ways” (Chaucer 183). The Wife of Bath is portrayed as a very flamboyant and domineering character. She enjoys things such as romance, traveling, and talking. The Wife of Bath is a feminist who depicts through her tale her radical belief that women should have dominion over their husbands. As shown in the opening quotation, the Wife of Bath is not afraid to admit that she had experienced five marriages. The Wife of Bath’s radical beliefs are demonstrated through the phylogeny in “The Wife of Bath Prologue and Tales”, through utilizing sex to gain power, and through her feminist attitudes in each of her five marriages.
It is no secret that women throughout history have been seen as the less of two halves. In other words, they were always undervalued and held no real political/social standard within society. In fact their only job in society was to be obedient/submissive to their male counterparts. However, The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, a poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer, redefine those ideals set upon women. The poem is broken up into two parts one is the prologue which includes a woman who talks about the rules set by the church and society on women. As well as how society looks upon women who live her life style. She counters these teaching by her knowledge of the bible by introducing biblical men who had more than one wife. It is later revealed that her sole purpose for doing this was not only to gain women sovereignty. But, to create an equal plane for both the husband and wife in order to formulate a happy marriage and to prove that a women can decide to be submissive or not. After the prologue comes the women tale, which she talks about each of her five husband and how she uses her feminine charm to control them. As well as a male knight who suddenly finds himself in a very dire situation and is in need of help. The same women, now old, helps the knight in exchange for his hand in marriage. Both the prologue and the tale fixate on the idea of women sovereignty; self government and it purpose to achieving a happy and successful relationship between both
The Wife of Bath’s tale sets up the story of a young knight that is given they key to life from an ugly elderly woman. This key coming in the form of the ideology that what all women want is control over their husbands or boyfriends. An ideology that is exemplified in the end of this tale when the woman offers the knight a choice of either being married to a loyal woman who is old and ugly, or a young woman who is beautiful, but disloyal. This choice perplexes the knight, but in the end he allows for the woman to decide, thus fulfilling the ideology. This pleases the woman who responds by granting him a wife who is both loyal and beautiful. These are the overall main points of the novel, which bring about the moral lesson as described in the
First is the stereotype that it is deplorable for a woman to marry more than once. The Wife of Bath begins the tale with a prologue that sheds light into her life and what she has gone through as a woman. “Experience … would be quite sufficient for me, to speak of the woe that is in marriage …I have had five husbands at the church-door” (NeCastro, The Wife of Bath’s Tale: A Modern English Translation). She married five times with each marriage being different from the last, so she had to constantly adjust to each of her husbands.
The wife ridicules the performance of her husband in bed so they give her everything she wants. By ridiculing her husband’s and telling them they are bad in bed she convinces them to give her more money to make up for their sexual incompetence. Therefore, the Wife of Bath shows the travellers how she uses her sexuality and forcefulness to gain maistrie over each of her husband’s.
“The Wife of Bath prologue” explains how the wife of Bath first got married at the age twelve and had five Husbands. “The Wife of Bath Tale” talks about how a knight rapes a virgin woman. For the knight to avoid death he had to answer a question. The Wife of Bath gave the knight the answer but in return he had to marry her. This essay will address the historical and social events as well as the wife of Bath personality.
The underlying theme addressing social status in The Wife of Bath’s Tale plays a larger role in the plot than one might think. The whole tale is essentially about a knights search to find what women really desire in a relationship as a punishment for raping a young maiden, and the social
The Wife of Bath appears to be a liberated woman. Her tale is very long and she is able to hold her own among the bickering pilgrims. She makes it know that she believes women should be equal to men. She also has had 5 husbands all of whom she tells them how she got the upper hand in the marriage or became the boss. The only problem is when this happened they would die. The 5th husband was twice her age and she got her eye on him at her 4th husbands funeral. She got the upper hand on him, because of a fist fight between them and she pretended to play dead. He was very upset and told her he would do whatever she wanted if she were to be okay and not die. She spoke her mind and was rather rebellious in a time when men dominated society.
In the Wife of Bath’s prologue, the Wife of Bath, Allison, describes her experiences throughout different parts of her life and how those helped her to develop into the person she is. Allison is a well-traveled character who is a skilled seamstress and self-proclaimed marriage expert. Despite having been married five different times to five different men, Allison rejects the typical role of the “submissive wife,” and instead opts to use her sexuality to seduce her husbands into giving her money or
The Wife of Bath establishes herself as an authority on marriage, due to her extensive personal experience with the institution. Since her first marriage at the tender age of twelve, she has had five husbands for seemingly all the wrong reasons. This tale paints a very harsh image on women therefore I would like to view this tale from a feminist stand point and address the struggle for female equability and also discuss the representation of female gender roles. It portrays women in all the wrong ways and allows people to assume the worst in us.
The Wife of Bath gives the reader an understanding of her stance on marriage and how she perceives the world. Throughout her five marriages, the Wife has learned a great deal and as her marriages progressed, there is a shift in power, both physically and emotionally. Throughout her marriages she has a sense of authority and uses it to her advantage to gain satisfaction within her relationships. Historically, the man is portrayed as the head of marriage, but the Wife of Bath shows that is not always the case.
