The ideas and theories which the Wife of Bath provides in her prologue demonstrate many of the same ideas and theories displayed in her tale. Although in her tale there are a few idealistic changes. In both the prologue and the tale, women start off as empowered beings. At the end of the prologue the Wife of Bath ends up being in a demeaning position yet the end of the tale may be interpreted in two ways. Nearing the end of the year he has not found the answer but comes upon a ‘hag’ who has the answer. She agrees to share the answer with him but makes him promise to give himself to her as compensation. The hag, in the tale, making the Knight give her something for a simple answer coincides with the idea in the prologue that everything has a price. In the prologue, the Wife of Bath believes strongly that everything has a price, including marriage. She feels as though she fully understands the economy of marriage and has used her assets to the full extent. She explains how she used her body to gain power and wealth. In the prologue she explains that she is aware that one day her looks will go and she will no longer be able to use her body for profit. Although once this happens, she plans and hopes to use her mind to attract and manipulate men which is exactly what the hag in the tale accomplished. The hag succeeded in using her mind to trap the Knight into marriage even though once he got what he wanted from her he wanted to throw her away. Although throughout most of the tale the Wife of Bath is best compared to the hag, in the sense of dismissing someone once you have gotten what you want from them she is quite similar to the Knight. Beginning with the prologue, the Wife of Bath makes an argument for why she believes sexuality is the key weapon to use against men to achieve her goals. Doing such, she twists the typical gender roles of the time; that women are dependent upon their husbands and need a partner for protection and wealth. The structure of the Wife of Bath’s tale in which a story is told within the story itself and the knight’s character develops are key in the tale’s entertainment and telling of its moral. The tale begins with the reader learning of the knight’s predicament - he raped a woman and in order to save his life from the punishment of death he must answer the queen’s question of what it is that women desire most. After elaborating upon the knight’s travels in which he asks numerous women what they desire most, the Wife of Bath, as the narrator, asks, “By god, we women can keep no secret; witness Midas-do you want to hear the story?” (Chaucer, 185). The story then breaks away from the tale of the knight and instead tells of a man named Midas whose wife could not keep his secret of having donkey ears and ended up telling the river his secret. In the time period in which the novel takes place, this short divulsion served to further the moral value of the novel in telling that women cannot keep secrets, however, this is not a moral that would be honored today as women not being able to keep secrets is a stereotype and not a truth. The novel chronologically develops the knight’s character as he begins as a sinful man who had little value for women, and ends as the ideal husband by allowing his wife to control his decisions. From this, it can be interpreted that although the wife claims to be providing evidence for women being equal to men, she is actually saying that women are better than men. Lastly, The Wife of Bath’s Tale is wronged because it goes against the idea of patriarchy. Patriarchy goes all the way back to Aristotle who said that there was a pyramid of life; gods on top, the men, and last women and whatever was left. Women, back then, were to obey their husbands, and if they didn’t their husbands were allowed to beat some sense into them to put them back in line. With that information comes the Wife of Bath who stands up in front of the group and explains how she would trick her husbands and proved that she was just as smart, maybe even smarter.
