Project Report – Wireless Security Control System & Sensor Network for Smoke & Fire Detection
By Abdulrahman Alsaadi

Abstract – The project entails the design and engineering of a wireless smoke detector unit and network. The premise of the wireless network is to alert and set off all of the smoke detectors in the network if one smoke detector is set off. With our current progress we have enough equipment for two smoke detectors. The hardware modules include the PIC microcontroller (arduino), temperature sensor, and smoke sensor. In its complete implementation, it will consist of a structure with two separate rooms. This structure will act as a model of a home with two rooms.
I. Introduction
A smoke detector is a device that detects any changes in the air and issues an alarm to alert nearby people that there is a potential danger. Smoke alarms are self-contained devices that incorporate a means of detecting a fire and give a warning. The size of a smoke detector is about the size of the palm. They can detect fires in their early stages to give people precious minutes to enable them to safety and others in the vicinity. The term wireless is normally used to refer to any type of electrical or electronic operation without the use of “hard wired” connection. Wireless communication transfer information over a distance without the use of wires. This is possible by using electromagnetic waves or radio frequency (RF) to carry a signal over part or the entire
Wireless Routers is a wireless local area network (WLAN) that determine the next route of the packet should travel to the destination (Rouse, 2005). It converts the internet connection that was received from phone lines into radio signals and brings convenience to the portability devices that has built-in network card to gain the radio signals to get to the Internet connection (Switcher, 2015). Table 2 refers to the comparison of three models of wireless router.
Wired network uses cables to connect devices to the internet, however, wireless network uses radio waves to devices to connect internet.
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are made up of tiny sensing devices; capable of sensing some changes of incident/parameters and communicating with other devices, over a specific area. Mainly used for tracking, surveillance and environmental monitoring. These devices make it possible to be used in a system such as Home Automation and Security. Our purpose is to make our Home secure from any attacks physically and to the sensor network. Securing our Home starts from the outside, setting up a perimeter around house sensing intrusion and alerting the home owner. Allowing only predetermined users to enter the home. From the inside you can monitor for fires, leak, humidity or smoke, which the system will promptly report this to the owner as well as alert the proper authorities. Making most of the home voice controlled only recognized by the owner’s voice can add another layer of security.
Party Plates Company has established the need for a new proposal with wireless technology. Team B will research some marketing tools that will assist Party Plates in meeting their goals of advancement in sales and certain goals. This proposal will focus on wireless technology that will be beneficial to the party plate business. Team B will also provide the pros and cons to these wireless technologies and justification of the choice to incorporate them into Party Plates Company. In the proposal, Team B will also include a spreadsheet presenting the equipment needed for using the technologies and the costs
A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. The router sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection. The process also works in reverse, with the router receiving information from the Internet, translating it into a radio signal and sending it to the computer's wireless adapter (Brain & Wilson, 2011).
4. Radio: most common form of wireless transmission, typical of home routers and most wireless devices to use this form. Infared uses low frequency light waves to carry data using line-of-sight.
The conceptual framework for the deployed system is given bellow. The framework contains one Coordinator which is connected to the control station computer through USB cable, four routers and three sensor devices. Data packets from the sensor device are transmitted to the coordinator via multi-hop routing.
More specifically, a sensor is "a device that responds to phenomena, such as light, pressure, or heat, and generates a signal that can be measured or interpreted" [16]. The sensor network community often defines a sensor node as a wireless device which is small, capable of responding to one or several stimuli, processing the data and transmitting the information over a short distance using a radio link. Sensor nodes contain electronic circuits for minimizing power consumption [17]. Sensors are for measuring sound, light and temperature that is typically thought. However, sensors can measure other variables, such as vibrations or electromagnetic fields [18]. Sensor transmits values wirelessly to one or several BSs
The best way to set up your own off grid fire protection system is to set up tanks that will be filled with water. A water pump that is motor driven and some hoses are all that are needed for this project. Fuel is also necessary to run the pump.
Always have the smoke alarms on every floor. My single story, small home has four smoke alarms -- in my bedroom, my sister’s bedroom, my parent’s bedroom, and in the hallway. The living room, laundry room, and the two bathrooms do not have smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are not placed in kitchens to avoid false alarms. To protect yourself, place the smoke alarms 10 feet from a cooking appliance. Smoke alarms should never be installed by windows and doors because they will not work correctly. All wall-mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling. Install smoke alarms within 3 feet of a building’s apex. Fire extinguishers can also be used to decrease the chance of a fire. Every family needs training for what to do when a real fire comes. In addition, every family should have an evacuation plan to escape a fire. Fire sprinklers inside the home can help protect your family from a starting fire. To prevent a fire, blow out all candles before going to sleep. Always check smoke alarms every month to make sure they are working properly.
Efficient fire obstacles are the main submissive fire protection system that restricts the spread of fire and confines smoke and toxic gas movement to other parts of a building. They divide a building into fire compartments that are enclosed on all sides to confine the fire and smoke to the compartment in which the fire started. Fire barriers are extremely important, especially in multi-story buildings, because they provide extra time for staffs and visitors to safely evacuate the building in a fire emergency. High hazard areas are enclosed in fire barriers to protect people and buildings. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
A wireless network is any type of computer network that uses wireless data connections for connecting network nodes .Wireless networking is a method by which homes, telecommunications networks and enterprise (business).Installations avoid the costly process of introducing cables into a building, or as a connection between various equipment locations. Wireless telecommunications networks are generally implemented and administered using radio communication. This implementation takes place at the physical level (layer) of the OSI model network structure.
Today we have moved beyond young men in street rattling wooden noise makers, technology has given us a new kind of fire alarm. There are 2 main kinds of fire alarms: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization alarms sound more quickly when a flaming, fast moving fire occurs, photoelectric alarms are quicker at sensing smoldering, smoky fires. There are also combination smoke alarms that combine ionization and photoelectric into one unit, called dual sensor smoke alarms. Most of the fire alarms are powered by batteries which in order for the alarm to work, need to changed regularly. They provide early detection, and thus warning, of the fire. But they take no action on the fire itself.
Therefore; drones are to be developed for putting out vigorous fires autonomously. They might save a lot of lives of people in accidents’ sites as well as lives of brave firemen. This is noble aim and shall be very effective in combating fires; however it shall have some ethical and controversy issues.
