The techniques gleaned from this week’s reading came from the fifteen pieces of “Wisdom of The Ages” in Chapter 4 (Manning, Curtis, McMillen, & Attenweiler, 2011). There are quite a few significant theories one must apply towards lessening the everyday consumption of stress. An illustration of this includes setting specific goals, knowing one’s limitations, changing to a healthy diet, seeking positive support and inspiration, and trusting in time that all things will work out according to God’s plan. However, the first most influential of the three techniques that caught my attention is to manage my stress by changing the environment surrounding me. The second technique to decrease stress is to find different ways to create a work-life balance
In the story, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, the main character, Chris McCandless left a strong and lasting impression on a lot of people. Chris who was well-educated, smart young man who touches a lot of people heart, but mostly touches the heart of an a 80-year-old veteran Ron, Franz who is a retired army veteran who once had a drinking problem due to his son and wife's death and two other people who name is Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg that seemed to catch the interest also. McCandless was one of those people. Which it stated that ‘McCandless made an indelible impression on a number of people during the course of his adventure, most of whom spent only a few days in his company, a week or two at most
In the book, “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer. Chapter 10 tells us the body of Chris McCandless was found and for a week they still had not been able to identify the body. On September 10th, the story of a dead hiker was published in the Anchorage Daily News. Jim Gallien saw the article and called the State Troopers and said, “Hey, I think I gave that guy a ride.”(99) At first the trooper did not believe Jim, because there have been already a number of people who said they knew the hikers identity. Jim kept talking to the trooper and described a few items that was not mentioned in the newspaper. Ultimately, what convinced the trooper about Jim’s claim was an entry in Chris’s journal that said, “Exit Fairbanks. Sitting Gallien. Rabbit Day” (99).
A tangible example would be to recognise and practice the kind of activities that promote our own health and wellbeing so as to minimise the effect of workplace stressors. Chang, E., et al. (2006) concurs that workplace stress is a challenge for the nursing profession, and stress has a detrimental effect on our job satisfaction, mental and physical well-being.
Chapters 3 and 4 of Tim Keller's Every Good Endeavor expanded vastly on the idea of work and the way God sees it as well as it's purposes. Chapter 3 begins with Keller describing to us our greatest work given to us by God namely our call to "fill the Earth and subdue it”. He expands on this idea of "subduing” the Earth by explaining it as more of a cultivation process. This idea makes the task itself more of a caretakers responsibility rather than a conquerors territory. We are God's representatives called to follow His pattern of development by fulfilling our individual callings. Keller also includes that we are called to creativity just as God called Adam to come up with names for the animals he wants us to create just like Him. and again
After reading chapters 8-9 of the book Into the Wild, There were other discussed adventurers. Such as Rosellini, Waterman, McCunn and Russ. Who did similar things that McCandless did. The book takes a turn here sharing there stories as well. Which I found was a delightful and entertaining turn of events. To read and learn about others ordeals and learn from their mistakes. Choosing one to write about it would be Rosellini. His ideas, beliefs and mistakes were definitely interesting to read about. The fact that he was a well educated man who had also been a Mayor. The experimenting with differant eras such as the Roman times and the Iron, Bronze Ages and also, the interest of if it was possible to live without technology and simply live off the land.
In S.E Hinton's novel, The Outsiders, there were three significant passages from Chapter 9. As Johnny was in the process of dying, he mentioned a very catchy passage to Ponyboy: "Stay gold, Ponyboy"(148). This quote defined that all things must have an ending such as the beautiful things you've witnessed. For instance, Johnny and Ponyboy realized that their relationship was about to come to an end, so Johnny advises Ponyboy to stay the way he is or be innocent. And he also meant that Ponyboy needs to protect himself when he's in danger.
October 4th, 1957, a russian made object is launched into space. This was the first thing ever sent into space by mankind. This event could not have come at a worse time in history. It occurred in the middle of the Cold War between primarily the United States of America and Soviet Union, but really between all capitalist and communist governments around the world. If this feat had been accomplished outside the time period of this feud or by a neutral country it would have been celebrated worldwide.
If a large majority of individuals view stress as their enemy, this can severely take a toll on their health throughout their lifetime, and even cause their life to be shortened prematurely. As the lecture illustrates, 43 percent of people who believe stress as harmful had an increased risk of dying. An obstacle or barrier that might hinder this improvement would be human nature, because it’s easy for human to get stressed and be clouded with thoughts to be able to solve the issue of handling stress. On the other hand, to solve the obstacles the society needs to be educated on how to make stress their friend. Also, introducing mechanism within their life to reduce stress, and urge others to see stress as a positive thing rather than a negative. Thus causing society to live a healthier physical and mental lifestyle in the
Each ‘Book’ in this story represents and covers a specific period of time in each of the character’s lives.
Although there are far too many factors to adequately discuss in this paper, a review of the various stressors are a worthwhile activity. Candid and honest answers to certain questions can assist in techniques to allieviate stress. “How have I overcome stress in the past?” ”How much of my stress is work related?” “What characteristics do I tend to have when I am stressed?” How can I impliment stress management strategies in oreder to balance my life?” Currently, I am actively engaged in answering such questions and developing and improving copimg strategies. I have found much success in most circumstances. There exist some stress with respect to the volume of classwork given, but it is much less when compared to the esteem and feelings of self-efficacy gained. My current studies seems the have served as a major reducer of stress. There is however, much room for improvement.
What knowledge and techniques I have gained form reading this Brief Combination Techniques chapter? I recommend this chapter to people who are lack of techniques or strategies for their stress management because this chapter will teach or demonstrate what techniques or how to apply the tools of techniques. For example, what relaxation techniques fit for your specific needs or areas and which techniques is more power effect. Personal for me, it was applicable because it taught me how to draw my self deeper into the relaxation experience by visualizing the happiest moments in my life with deep breathing.
In the introductory part before Chapter 1 of The Pearl, it talks about a parable. A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or a spiritual lesson. In The Pearl, i think the parable of the story so far is Kino and his family finding the pearl. I think this is the parable, because they were very excited to find the pearl, because they thought the pearl would be able to treat Coyotito’s scorpion bite and they would be able to buy and supply things for their family better than they do now. The pearl did not do this, and caused evil to spread through their family.
At the end of the third chapter, Stephen bravely goes to confess his sins. The first part of the chapter mainly focuses on the sins Stephen has committed; the tone up until pages 157 to 158 is very dreary, dark, and hellish. Once Stephen has been cleansed of his guilt, the way he describes his surroundings and how he is feeling leads the reader to believe that he now has a unquestionable belief in God. Stephen lets out his joy of being closer to god in a few key sentences until he falls asleep peacefully.
In 1476 it went inside the bedroom with a decree that condemned “the immoderate and excessive expenses that are made in this city in the ornament of ladies and the decoration of beds and chambers to the great offense of our lord god and the universal damage of our gentlemen and citizens, that as a thing alien to every laudable and honourable custom and example, can no longer be tolerated in any way”. The cost of decorating the bedchamber itself with wood, gilding, and paint was not to exceed 150 ducats.
The feeling of stress is inevitable to avoid and eliminate entirely from our lives. As we go through life and our stress levels rise for various reasons, we may experience feelings such as worry, anxiety, insomnia, etc. We search for strategies to assist with decreasing the feeling of stress or to better help cope with it. Coping is defined as “managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve life’s problems, and seeking to master or reduce stress” (King 521). Individuals perform a wide range of activities to help manage stress and decrease its effects such as working out at a gym regularly, attending routine social gatherings, and reading books. One stress reducer that our society often overlooks is nature and its benefits.
