Economically and socially the movement gained women more rights and privileges. The Women's Rights Movement granted women more political rights like property rights. It changed how both genders saw one another and themselves. But did it really give women and men equality? Did it really make everything better?

To what extent was the National Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848 the start to women’s suffrage?

At one point women were dependent on men and this would change, women would become more independent when they gained their right to vote and men wouldn't control everything.

Back in the mid 1800’s the first women’s convention was initiated by Elizabeth Stanton, along with others who founded the Women’s Suffrage Movement. After attending an World Anti-Slavery Society meeting, where the women were required to sit is a separate area away from the men, the women decided that they were little better than slaves and decided to do something about it. (Pearson, 2017)

By 1963, the Washington D.C. public schools had been integrated, as had the military, the federal work force, and public accommodations in the city, but the racial controversy was still an ongoing debate around the nation. Marion Trikosko’s photograph titled “Signs Carried by Many Marchers, During the March on Washington” was taken on August 28, 1963 during the march for jobs and freedom at the District of Columbia. It is one of the pictures in the “Civil Rights- A Long Road” collection from the Library of Congress that depicts a group consisted of mainly Black people who walked in lines while carrying “We demand…” and “We march for…” signs. The photographer captured the essential repetition in the signs’ designs, a variety of peoples’ actions, and the movement of the crowd in order to signify the united formation and strong dedication of the marchers to fight for civility and liberty.

After the Civil War, the movement of women’s suffrage had a new inspiration, as they used African American suffrage as a stepping stone towards women’s suffrage. Organizations, such as the National Association Women’s Suffrage Association and Women’s Christian Temperance, had clear goals to reform the urban areas with women’s suffrage. As this empowering reform took place, women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries started to question their own roles within society. As women faced opposition and had diminished roles within society, the women of the late 19th century sought equality.

With over five million women, men and children united in all seven continents, the Women’s March was by far the largest and most peaceful protest in history. Washington, Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Sydney and Paris are only a few out of the many cities world-wide that all groups of ages, genders, races and religions merged together on January 21st, 2017 to send a clear message to the brand-new government of the United States. Accumulating no arrest, the protesters conveyed that all rights are women’s rights, making the demonstration a successful act of civil disobedience. Although the Women’s March has yet to force the Congress to reform civil policy, the protest, along with all peaceful resistances, continue to positively impact free societies.

There are people, groups, and events that helped women gain equal rights as women. The Seneca Falls Conventions occurred in 1848 and Congress were introduced to the amendment granting women’s suffrage in 1878. (Document 3) After many women began to realize that their rights were limited, about 300 women and men came to the Seneca Falls Convention. The Seneca Falls Convention occurred on July 19 to 20 in the year of 1848. It was the first convention on women’s right and everything except women’s suffrage was approved. The women’s suffrage movement of the early 20th century would cause a huge shift in the nation’s philosophy regarding equal rights as well as gender roles and differences. Though many were in favor of this way of thinking, some suffragists had different ideas on how to go about ratifying their ideology within the United States. One of the main methods they used to secure the right to vote for American women was trying to acquire a constitutional amendment to grant women the right to vote. This was the more grueling approach of the two, for it would require two-thirds of each house of congress to approve of the amendment, as well as be ratified by three-fourths of the country’s state legislatures. The Women’s Suffrage Movement of the 1920’s worked to grant women the right to vote nationally, thereby allowing women more political equality. Due to many industrial and social changes during the early 19th century, many women were involved in social advocacy efforts, which eventually led them to advocate for their own right to vote and take part in government agencies. Women have been an integral part of society, working to help those in need, which then fueled a desire to advocate for their own social and political equality. While many women worked tirelessly for the vote, many obstacles, factions, and ultimately time would pass in order for women to see the vote on the national level. The 19th Amendment, providing women the right to vote, enable women further their pursuit for full inclusion in the working of American society.

During the late 19th century, women were in a society where man was dominant. Women not having natural born rights, such as the right to vote, to speak in public, access to equal education, and so forth, did not stop them to fight for their rights. Women's lives soon changed when Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony played a prominent role to help bring about change.

Of all the issues that were in the middle of reformation mid 1800’s, antislavery, education, intemperance, prison reform, and world peace, women’s rights was the most radical idea proposed. The Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 was a rally held by Elizabeth Cady Stanton with the common goal to eventually achieve equal rights among all citizens. Frederick Douglass, who became an acclaimed activist in the African American Equal Rights movement, accompanied the movement. Moreover, The Declaration of Sentiments was a document that reflected the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, reiterating the sentiment from the Bible that “all men [and women] are created equal.” Concurrent to the publication of this document, for the first time, women insisted that they were men’s equals in every way. The Declaration of Sentiments was pivotal in Women’s history, although it was not given credit until the late 20th century. However, immediately after the Declaration of Sentiments was published, women and activist groups were inspired to take action towards rights for all underprivileged American citizens. The convention took place in a small town in upstate New York, which was home to four of the five people who organized the gathering. (DuBois, 1999, p. 45) This was the first time female equality was discussed in a public place. The Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 was one of the most important events in women’s rights history.

On March 3, 1913, dressed in a white cloak riding a white horse, lawyer Inez Milholland guided the great woman suffrage parade along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. (Harvey, n.d.). Following Inez Milholland stretched out a lengthy line with nine bands, four mounted brigades, three announcers, about twenty-four floats, and more than 5,000 marchers including, women and some men (Harvey, n.d.). In an article by the New York Times from 1913 described that while it was possible to keep free just a tighten walkway in which the “suffragists” passed through; there were still other delays along the way (5,000 Women March, Beset by Crowds, 1913). It was almost sundown when the final marchers made their way to the White

I honestly didn't know what the exhibit was about until we got there, and someone explained what it was. When I heard suffrage I thought it was women suffering, not the fight to vote. The exhibit was nice, a lot of interesting information. It was disappointing that we didn't get to look through the whole exhibit. I was in the first group and we ran out of time. It would have been good if the guide told us some of the basics and then let people explore by themselves for a bit. That, or the guide to show parts of the exhibit faster than he did. Overall, I found the woman suffrage exhibit a good use of class
