World War 1
World War 1 was not caused by one single event; it was caused by a combination of events. The main causes of World War 1 were Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, Mutual Defense Alliances, and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
The reason Nationalism was a cause of World War 1 was because Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer wanted to be a part of Austria-Hungary. The Slavic peoples instead were to become part of Serbia. This wasn’t the only form of Nationalism, some European countries wanted to try and prove their dominance and power. Along with this there was a competition for foreign resources.
Imperialism is extending control of a nation over foreign lands. Imperialism contributed to the war because countries wanted to

Even though these were the main countries that fought; the war included almost every nation. Before the war started alliances existed between Russia and Serbia, Germany and Austria-Hungary, Britain and France and Belgium, and Japan and Britain. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which got Russia involved. Germany saw Russia and France mobilizing and declared war on Russia and France. Germany attacked France through Belgium which involved Britain. This is what pulled Japan into the war. The United States joined as Russia was leaving. After Russia left they became involved in the Bolshevik Revolution. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk took Russia out of the war. Italy left the Triple Alliances to join the Allies, when they thought that Germany would lose. The most immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Archduke Ferdinand was shot by a man named Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb. Princip was working with a Serbian anti-Austrian secret society called "The Black Hand" and not only killed Archduke Ferdinand but his Ferdinand’s wife Sophie. Ferdinand was not well liked in Austria. Austria-Hungary, with the back-up of Germany, used this event to punish Serbia.
The reason the United States became involved with World War 1 was because Germany sent the Zimmerman Telegram trying to persuade Mexico to attack us in exchange for land. The land offered to Mexico was Texas and
The first cause of World War One was due to militarism. World War One was the result of too much military power. Britain had a stronger military power (Royal Navy) because it had the highest per capita expenditures. The desire for military power was high because everyone was building their armies up to
Every country that was included in World War 1 used nationalism to get them pumped for war. “… Germany and its people, who were convinced that they fought a war of defense, were only guilty.” (Document 5) Nationalism also posed a problem for Austria-Hungary and the Balkans, areas comprised of many conflicting national groups. It made them battle because they
The First World War started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The causes of World War I were militarism, alliances between European countries, imperialism, nationalism and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Keegan, 2014). Primarily, it may be cited, that its cause was a struggle between the Central Powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy) and the Allied Powers (France, Great Britain and Russia) over the expansion of Serbia into the Balkans.
World War one, also known as the “great war” was directly caused by the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. What you may not know is that the root causes to World War one were Nationalism, Militarism, and Alliances. Not only do they have a huge role in starting the war, but also making sure the war was finished.
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand is what lead to the immediate beginning of the war. Franz Ferdinand was in line to be the next heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne. He was later shot to death along with the wife during a visitation to Sarajevo in 1914. A Serbian group, known as the Black Hand, was blamed on for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. This event lead Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia for the assassiantion, which led to the beginning of World War 1 (History.com Staff,2009). Other WW1 analysts believe that there might be no single reason that can be attributed for the main cause of the war. These WW1 analysts think that the war might have started as a result of several other factors that lead to the buildup of WW1. These factors could included the development of militarism, imperialism, and nationalism. These factors contributed heavily to create the conflicts that led to the beginning of WW1.
World War 1 has attracted much controversy due the conditions, kinds of weapons, and the heavy loss of life. World War 1 went over three years from 1914 to 1918. It killed about seventeen million and injured twenty-one million people. The cost of World War 1 was estimated to be a total of $337 billion which included both direct and indirect costs. The war essentially started with the assassination of Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was killed by Gavril Princip in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Bosnia was a part of Austria-Hungary and the Bosnians were against it. The Serbians wanted Bosnia and Herzegovina to be theirs and it is believed that Princip obtained the gun from the Serbians. Black hand which was a secret society organized by the Serbian
There were many reasons as to why World War I began. According to Document 2 the event that started World War I was the death of the Archduke of Austria-Hungarian, Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Bashia. The other main causes of World War I was militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Militarism was the policy of aggressive preparedness, european nations began arming to protect their assets. Alliances is when European nations formed alliances to create a balance of power throughout Europe. The Triple Alliance was a secret agreement
Russia also made an alliance with France against Germany and Austria-Hungary. There was another alliance between Russia, France and Britain to counter the threats from
The assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand played a key role in causing the war due to those involved. The archduke was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914. This assassination quickly set off a chain reaction of events culminating in the outbreak of World War I.
One underlying cause of World War 1 was the alliance systems. There were two major alliances. The triple entente and the triple alliance (Document A). The triple entente consisted of Russia, United Kingdom, and France. The triple alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and italy. Alliances were quick to support their allies (Document B). Each country had a different point of view of who started the war. So this created a chain reaction (Document B). Those are a few ways alliance systems caused World War 1.
There were many causes that contributed to World War I like: Imperialism, Militarism, and Alliances. Europeans thought they could make the world their oyster and take over any areas they pleased. Most countries did not appreciate their land being taken from them. For example, Serbia wanted independence from their mother country Austria-Hungary, so a nationalist group called the Black Hand, decided to assassinate the Archduke. If Serbia didn’t assassinate the Archduke of Austria-Hungary the war probably wouldn't have happened at all. Europe’s imperialism is what caused the Great War that went for four long years from 1914 to 1918 and had over 30,000,000 million casualties. The main cause of World War I was Imperialism which caused Alliances and
There was a lot of reasons World War 1 commenced imperialism, assassination, nationalism, alliances, and militarism are a few of WW1’s causes. On June 28th, 1914 archduke of Austria-Hungary and his wife were on their way home from an event when their driver took a wrong turn and Blackhand member Gavrilo Princip just happened to be in the alleyway where they stopped to turn around. Gavrilo Princip quickly pulled out his gun and shot both Archduke and his wife. This Assassination caused Serbia and Austria-Hungary to declare war which lead to WW1. Militarism is the belief or desire of a government of people that I country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests. Militarism denoted a rise in military expenditure, an increase in military and naval forces, more influence of the military men upon the policies of the civilian government, and a preference for force as a solution to problems. This caused the war because it built up nations armies and when you have a huge army that's good you use it. Imperialism is a policy of extending another country‘s power and influence through colonization, and use of military force to create empires they exploited weaker countries. This policy of one nation dominating other countries or regions caused the war because countries wanted to be huge empires like Great Britain. There were many causes of World War 1 but the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand,
Throughout history there has been competition for resources and domination. This competition has led to conflicts that have caused destruction, social disruptions and death. World War I was no exception to this competition. World War I was known as the war to end all wars and was caused by a combination of factors. Some causes of World War I was nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the main cause which was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip of Serbia. While the United States attempted to remain neutral and stay out of the war, Germany choose actions that gave the U.S. no choice but to enter and help their Allies defeat the other powers.
What started World War One and the events that drew the United States in to it? A young man by the name of Gavrilo Princip shot and killed the archduke heir to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie at point blank range. Princip actions cause an outrage among the Europeans which escalated the bitter freud with the Serbian and the Austro-Hungarians. The disputes over and many other issues lead to the Austro-Hungarians and its German ally declaring war on Serbia. The Russians allied with the Serbians. With this move the Germans declared war on both Russia and France. During the conflict, the Germans drew the British in the war by using parts of Britain land to reach its enemy. By doing this Germany was disrespecting British
Nationalism, having a very strong passion for your country, was a main cause of World War 1 because many people felt the need to fight for their country. In countries from all over the world, men began enlisting in the army as soon as they could. In the first year of war, on October 3rd, 1914 approximately 33 000 Canadians set out overseas to Britain to fight for their home country (Canadian War Museum). Many people who weren’t fighting over seas helped out the troops by all coming together to make care packages that included many things that the soldiers needed, such as food, clothing, cigarettes, etc. Many things that the care packages included helped the soldiers survive and fight for a longer period of time. There were many young men
