Prior to World War Two Japan had been going through an economic crisis and was having issues with its government. The Japanese society was very militaristic and prideful this, and their cultures deep seeded loyalty to its country, made it a key power in world affairs. The country was a member of the League of Nations and wanted to make its mark on the world by any means mainly through expanding its borders. The nation already had some footholds in other areas and was prepared to advance further due to a lack of resources. In the early 1930, before the start of WWII itself, Japan was already fighting and invading China. This was because Japan saw China was beginning to gain power and could possibly take back land Japan had taken in earlier …show more content…
When the League of Nations decided to condemn Japan’s actions, the nation left the league and continued to expand against approval. This caused the other world powers within the league to begin an embargo on all trade with Japan. These actions angered the Japanese and gave them a pretext for war rather than lose their land. The Empire decided it was best for them to lash out and scare many countries, including the U.S. in the attack on Pearl Harbor (History). However, this backfired as the Japanese intentions to scare the U.S. into submission only angered the United States into entering the war which was the Empire’s ultimate cause of …show more content…
So the United States needed to find a different strategy; they began to fire bomb all of Japan and gave the Japanese multiple warnings one of which clearly stated to Japan that if they refused surrender, they would meet “prompt and utter destruction.” After these attempts at peace the U.S. had no choice but to drop two atomic bombs, the first and last nuclear warheads to ever be used in history. The two bombs named “Little Boy” and “Fat Man,” dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, lead to the deaths of around 200,000 people. After the bombings, Japan realized they could not defend against such a weapon and decided to concede unconditional surrender and lost its nations power and
The Economic Effect on Japan during Post World War II Japan’s economy was greatly affected by the atomic bombs dropped on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Joseph Keenan, the chief prosecutor during the Tokyo Trial after the war, stated that the attack on Pearl Harbor violated both the war agreement and was a deceitful and treacherous act:" But the attack of Pearl Harbor did not alone result in murder and the slaughter of thousands of human beings. It did not eventuate only in the destruction of property. It was an outright act of undermining and destroying the hope of a world for peace. " (Keenan 57-58). In addition, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a crime against humanity since Japan gave American soldiers no time to organize proper defense, and deprived them of their right to fight for their safety. Japan also humiliated U.S. soldiers during the attack, which is a violation against human dignity. Japan attacked the Pearl Harbor to weaken U.S. , as a powerful response to U.S. oil embargo to Japan. In 1941, Japan and China reached stalemate, and the former was in dire need of resources for a long war. U.S. and the Western oil sanction did not want Japan to exploit the oil resources in China and Southeastern Asia, so U.S. set an embargo on oil to restrict Japan. Japan wanted the resources, but was concerned with U.S. military power, so it decided to strike a sudden attack to weaken U.S. in order to acquire resources and win the Sino-Japanese war. Clearly, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor to prevent U.S. intervention of Japanese interest, and Japan, desperately wanting U.S. out
A modernized Japan seeing the interest that the Chinese had with Korea saw the potential of this area and the economical importance of having this territory. This is what began the war as China didn’t want to lose their control over Korea which it eventually did in their losing the war. “Japan fought a war against China in 1894-95 over the control of Korea and gained Taiwan, Japan's first colony. In 1902, Japan signed an alliance with Great Britain, which signified a dramatic increase in international status and in 1904-5, Japan won a war against Russia, one of the major Western powers. In the process Japan expanded its empire, annexing Korea”. The Sino-Japanese war was their first foray into a major conflict of war and their success followed them, with a conflict with Russia and again success; Japan was now on its way to show the world it was a power to reckon with. The growth of Japan for much needed resources was one of the factors into their expansion plans, as an island nation they had limited capabilities and less land to accommodate any growth of resources, so they had go use the military to gain what they needed to boost their
In the past few decades, Japan has experienced a rapid growth with various problems associated with urbanization. Japan has also been facing declining birthrate, aging population, poverty, and overcoming deflation. Urbanization has enabled economic growth but it has contributed to climate change, pollution, congestion, and the growth of slums. Also Social and Economic development cannot be achieved without addressing global warming and other environmental issues. Due to these problems, Japan has passed several laws to implement urbanization policies and city growth management programs that primarily target regional balance in growth and concentration. The Japanese were also led by an ultra-nationalist government. They were very militaristic and had one of the most powerful armies at hand in Asia. Japan led all the countries participating in the world with a staggering 28.2% of the country's national income on defence and military. As Japan racism ruled throughout the military and they thought of themselves so highly that anyone who was not Japanese was considered inferior. Even before WWII Japan had a history of fighting and war with other countries. They had many disputes with China and also had some conflict with the Soviet Union, then later with the U.S in the war. Whenever conflict would arise, the japanese result would always be militarism as that is what the motive of the country was. Both Germany and Japan’s strong sense of nationalism was a great motivation for them to start WWII. With the Germans wanting to blame all struggles against the Jews and becoming a very anti semitic country, all this hate led them to finally pull the trigger and start their execution of the Jews during the

1937 July 7 - Japan invades China. In the time before World War II, Japan was growing rapidly. However, as an island nation they did not have the land or the natural resources to sustain their growth. Japan began to look to grow their empire in order to gain new resources. They invaded Manchuria in 1931 and China in 1937.
When most people think of World War Two they think of the Nazis and the concentration camps. They also think of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two sides, powers as they are named, of this major conflict were the Allied powers, the good guys, and the Axis Powers, the bad guys. Japan was part of Hitler’s Axis Powers and became Hitler’s eyes in the sea. Japan, prior to the 1940s, started to invade northern China and Korea. Japan gained control of Manchuria (Northern China) and all of Korea and then gained what would be known as Taiwan after the Sino-Japanese War. In the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War Japan was fighting to gain control and prevent the Chinese and Russians from making a move on them, the Japanese, being such a small country, feared that Russia and China would try and take the power that they had built overtime.
Japan expanded into Korea and Taiwan and Manchuria (the industrial heartland of China). But, this wasn’t enough for them; they wanted to dominate China as a whole. Japan wanted to prove to the world that it's an extremely powerful and strong country by especially invading China, which was traditionally the most powerful country of East Asia. (history.state.gov) In addition to that, Japan was still fighting in World War II and they need to make weapons and military equipment but, since they lacked resources, they saw that the Chinese resources would be extremely helpful. Another big reason behind their invasion was to strengthen their strategic position in the region. Unfortunately, the Japanese disrespected the Chinese civilians and overused their resources which caused extreme hatred from the Chinese towards the Japanese.
Japan is a fairly large country, ranking high on the list of biggest-to-smallest list of all countries in the world. The Japanese had also already seized Korea in the First Sino-Japanese War, increasing Japanese territory. The Japanese conquest for land led them to also sign the Tripartite Pact, deciding to split land they conquered. The Japanese kept trying for more land, but eventually, even the the land they had gained, was lost.
