During World War II, Germany was led by three powerful men: Adolf Hitler, Erwin Rommel, and Heinrich Himmler. All three men rose to power in Nazi Germany because of their particular leadership qualities and the way they complemented each other. Hitler was elected dictator because he was a ruthless political leader who persuaded his countrymen that he would make Germany powerful. Rommel was chosen to be general of the Nazi party because he was a self-confident leader with great knowledge in military training and excelled in making tactical military decisions. Himmler was appointed military commander because he was an ambitious, cruel officer who commanded his soldiers obedience through terror. Hitler’s childhood disappointments and difficult young adult experiences strongly contributed to the ruthless leader he became as an adult. Growing up, Hitler’s father was strict, did not provide a good education, and at times was very cruel. As a result, Hitler never learned the right way to act and thought differently then everyone else. He had a challenging time in school, and at age fifteen he dropped out of high school because he did not want to be forced to repeat the grade. Hitler’s only true passion since he was a young boy was painting, and at age seventeen, he was rejected from the art school of his dreams.
