'Wounded Vets Do The Impossible' : The Characteristics Of Heroism?

Heroism The actor Tom Hanks once said, “A hero is somebody who walks into the unknown.” When people stand up to challenges, despite not knowing what could happen next, they show heroism. In fact, anyone could back down when things become challenging, but heroes reflect optimism even when all’s lost. Instead of belittling one’s abilities like others might, a hero encourages them to exceed expectations. These qualities of a hero are everywhere, just everyday people being their best self. A true hero is perseverant, reflects hope, and does not doubt what people can do.
To begin with, a hero is perseverant. That is, to be perseverant, you must endure pain through obstacles. For instance, in the article “Wounded Vets do the Impossible” by 60 Minutes on CBS News it writes about veterans who go through a program called The Heroes Project. They climb some of the world's tallest mountains to find themselves once again after their years of service in Afghanistan limited their abilities. Tim Medvetz, founded “The Heroes Project” after his mountaineering experience helped him overcome an injury explains, “Toughest part is working through the pain...At some point it becomes more mental than physical...It’s miserable...high altitude mountaineering...it’s just pure suffering” (1). This shows that Medvetz climbed the mountain despite injury and pain. He demonstrates heroic behavior because despite the harsh conditions, he continued to persevere.
