ASPCA ASPCA was “founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law” (“About ASPCA”). By taking part in an ASPCA Signature Event, you’ll help spread awareness about animal cruelty and show your support for the ASPCA’s work to help animals in need nationwide. The ASPCA hosts a variety of events throughout the year that appeal to animal lovers with various animal welfare interests. ASPCA is an organization that helps animal abuse by adopting them and giving and the right care that they deserve.
Animals abuse is a big problem. 1000 greyhounds die each year from selective breeding ("11 Facts About Animal Cruelty"). “Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations that put greater priority on profits than the health of the puppies. Many dogs are plagued with illnesses like kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions they’re kept in” ("11 Facts About Animal Cruelty").”The exotic pet trade is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US and while some wild

“No matter the location or scale of the deployment, the ASPCA is prepared to take on animal cruelty cases when needed—from initial investigations to the final placement of rescued animals in homes” (“About ASPCA”). In 2016 alone, the Adoption Center staff welcomed 21,104 human visitors and found homes for 4,290 cats and dogs (“About ASPCA”). “The ASPCA’s mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States” (“About ASPCA”). “By taking part in an ASPCA Signature Event, you’ll help spread awareness about animal cruelty and show your support for the ASPCA’s work to help animals in need nationwide. ASPCA was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh. ASPCA is a charity that helps prevent cruelty to animals. There headquarters are in New York City. ASPCA was created because Henry Bergh believed that animal cruelty was a terrible thing and it should be eliminated. I quote Henry Bergh, “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States”. Basically, what he is saying, is that the goal of ASPCA is to protect animals from harsh people, homes, and their health(ASPCA).
The truth about PETA, is that they do not want all animals to roam free. They want the population of dogs and cats to be reduced through spaying and neutering. They would like people to adopt animals from pounds or animal shelters, rather than buying from pet shops or breeders. They do claim to be the number one animal activist groups out there. Are they who they claim to be? What they don't advertise, is that
Irresponsibility and lack of knowledge on the part of people buying pets is a huge problem. You need to know about the animals that are waiting in shelters and avoid buying our new pet. These are some shocking statistics about dogs and cats in the US.
PETA, though it does many things, has four main objectives. They focus on animal cruelty on factory farms, which are also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and intensive livestock operations (ILOs). These farms are more worried about profits and high volumes of goods than they are about human health, safe food, the environment, fair treatment of animals, and the surrounding economy (Factory Farms). PETA also focuses on cruel treatment to animals in laboratories, in the fur trade, and in the entertainment industry (like Khartoum). They also work on projects helping birds, beavers, and abused backyard dogs, as some examples. To reach the public, PETA uses many tactics, including working “through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and direct action.” (PETA: Official Page). PETA tries to reach the public any way possible.
A: Pet mills put money and profit, before the health of the animals they are breeding. Animals from these mills are usually living in disgusting conditions, and not getting the medical care that they need (Sheeter, n.d.). Because of this, the animals can get very prone to sickness, and have behavioural problems. They are left in small crates, squished together, have terrible diets, and dirty water (Sheeter, n.d.). A lot of dogs have been neglected or abused and have had little attention, interaction with humans or other animals, or obedience trainings. They were not treated with any sort or respect or appreciation or care, and they deserve that. The mums of the puppies are caged and constantly bred until they no longer can, they do not get
In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
Have you ever seen the ASPCA commercials where they show pictures of abused and neglected animals while the Sarah McLachlan song “In the Arms of an Angel” plays in the background? It is heart wrenching to watch and I always want to help those poor, defenseless animals. I took this opportunity to volunteer at the Town and Country Animal Shelter; a non-profit, no-kill shelter run entirely by volunteers serving eastern Nebraska and beyond. They are dedicated to providing a safe and caring living facility for pets in need until a loving home can be found, as well as helpful information for those wishing to rehome or adopt an animal. I chose this organization because they are a no kill shelter and they take in animals of all different sorts.
Throughout our lives we have most likely witnessed hundreds of commercials that try to persuade us to donate money. A great amount of advertisements exist to persuade their audiences to donate to a specific organization our cause. The ASPCA is an organization that works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws, and share resources with shelters nationwide. The ASPCA has many different campaign commercials that all have a singular purpose. The ASPCA announcement featuring Sarah Mclachlan that vividly portrays images of many different animals, is probably the most well known of all of the ASPCA commercials.
Puppies are taken away from their mothers too early which can cause illnesses or behavioral problems. Dogs raised at puppy mills are sold in two main places. They either go to pet stores or are sold over the internet. When dogs are shipped out to pet stores they can sometimes go up to many hours without food or water and are tightly squeezed in cages. Many pet stores sell the dogs without telling the buyer where they have come from. Not just are the dogs treated unkindly and in unhealthy ways but there is also a psychological affect on them as well.
Have you ever been watching tv and the ASPCA commercial comes on, you know the one that has the song “Arms of an Angle.” The commercial makes you feel super sad for the poor animals that have been abused and victimized because of cruel behavior. They ask you to donate money to help these animals recover. What if when these animals do recover they were turned into Service animals. This is a matter of great concern in our community because we could help get most, if not all the animals adopted into a loving home. In order to understand the issue more completely, I looked at turning shelter animals into service animals. Other members of my Group project are looking at TNR/Euthanasia, Physiological aspects of owning a shelter animal, and Worldwide
We are helping to shape a society that continuously improves the lives of animals,” as stated by ASPCA President and CEO, Matthew Bershadker. Just like my dog Tank brought so much joy and fulfillment to our lives, so has so many other animals from the ASPCA brought to the lives of others. It is evident that the ASPCA is an organization that all should support considering the fact that it fills the void of both the animals and the families whom are welcoming them into their hearts and homes. Although individuals say substandard comments about the ASPCA organization, there are hard facts that prove otherwise. For example, people often claim that the ASPCA is a kill center, where many animals are euthanized for no apparent reason whatsoever; however, this is not the case. Animals are only euthanized when they are violent and pose a threat to others (Position Statement on Euthanasia,
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) describes puppy mills situation to be overcrowded, unsanitary, without adequate food, water, and veterinary health care. Female dogs are even bred at every opportunity without a rest to maximize profit (“Puppy Mills”). Dogs are kept locked up in wired cages, stacked on top one another and sometimes their excrements are not properly monitored. Thus, this leads to unknown genetic disorders and poor genetic quality which makes it difficult for the dogs to live for a long time. In the end, it will cause a lot of stress and problems for the family down the road due to the dogs’ health. Many people who are unaware of these living conditions often tend to overlook their puppies neglect and suffering. When purchasing a new pet from a pet store, many people do not wonder where their pet may have come from, instead, they are more engulf in their excitement to bring home a new family
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA for short is the largest animal rights organization in the world.
(Charity Navigator, 2015, Charity rating) These numbers are a far cry from what Mr. Bergh told the Governor of New York when he paid a visit to the ASPCA and he stumbled over a hole in the old, tattered carpet and told Mr. Bergh to buy better carpet and send him the bill, Mr. Bergh simply replied, “No, thank you, Governor. But send me the money, and I will put it to better use for the animals. (as cited in Winograd, 2012, ¶3)” Moreover, for the last 15 years, the shelters, rescue groups, feral cat caretakers and No Kill proponents who have tried to restore Bergh’s vision through the No Kill revolution have been opposed by those like past ASPCA CEO Ed Sayres, supported by a Board of Directors content to count the money, all of whom appear intent on squandering Bergh’s noble legacy. When we look back on Mr. Berg’s life’s mission and what he wanted to accomplish and then look at the ASPCA today, one must wonder what happened? While it is not an easy task to undertake, we will take a look at animal “shelter”
There are many different things that fall under the category of “cruelty”, neglect and abuse being the two main subcategories. The most common type of animal abuse involves dogs, Pit-bulls in particular. In 2007, of 1800 media-reported cases of animal cruelty, 64% (1,126) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats, and 18% (337) involved other animals. Some of the most common places where animal abuse occur are, in no particular order: fur farms, dog fights, laboratories, races (both Greyhound and horse), slaughterhouses, and puppy mills. Some less thought of forms of animal abuse are crush videos, traditional Chinese medicine, the cat/dog meat trade in Asia, the ivory trade, trophy hunting, and even shock collars. Abandonment is the leading form of animal cruelty. (See illustration.)
