Introduction: Why Cook? Cooking is a task that every human being has to do in order to survive. In the introduction of the book, Cooked, Michael Pollan gives a remarkable explanation about the thoughts that men has on the importance of cooking. For instance, Pollan stated that anytime a man is asked about the important of cooking, he would try and talk about how cooking is a feminine thing. People may say that they are obligated to do something that they may not want to do. An example of this can when someone may say that they don’t want to go to work but they have to go. People do not have to go to work if they do not wish to go otherwise people would not have any income to live on. This is similar to the obesity issue. “Single-Handed Cooking” written by JJ Goode was the complete opposite of what I expected the article to be about. I thought the article single-handed cooking would be about a single parent/person working in the kitchen by themselves. But, I was wrong it turns out the article is about a guy who overcomes his misfortune of one arm being handicap, to do what he loves most cooking. I like how Goodes describes the kitchen of being a place of relaxation for most people, but for him it’s always been about facing his challenges of having one arm. Goodes said he used to avoid chopping up vegetables or food, and other grueling tasks of prepping because chopping proved to be difficult for him because he has on arm. Then he came to realize that sooner or later, to fully achieve success as a cook, he would have to do what he had been so good at avoiding chopping up food.

He believes that the processed food we consume gives us harmful deceases. Pollan urges us to listen to his words to avoid the western diet, he preaches that we should start eating healthier and to put more time and effort when it comes to buying food. Pollan provides us with his rules as well and claims that it will help us plot our way out of the western diet. Also, Pollan informs us that when it to the intake we tend to over eat, thus it becomes a huge threat to our health. The government has also made an attempt to put a stop to obesity by inverting an array of food options. By focusing on the main causes of obesity, Pollan overlooks the deeper problem of the lack of insufficient information, thus he leaves us with a lot of question marks .

Throughout essay “In the Kitchen,” Henry Louis Gates Junior recalls a time when he and his friends and family constantly tried to straighten their African American “kinky” hair. They did this to try to fit in with white people. When I started reading the article, I was unaware about who the author was. At first, I thought after reading the first couple of sentences that the voice was of a woman.
