Over the past few years, questions over the role of social class and the working-class in modern Britain have been raised. The strata of British society have been discussed more frequently than at any other time I can remember. At Oxford, I was one of the first students admitted on my postgraduate scholarship program on the basis of my achievements relative to my school, circumstances, identity, and background (after passing an initial blind, indepedent admissions process). My work in the humanties also frequently covers similar questions in a historical context, such as with Darwinian thought. I will not name any more names here. I believe this mode of debate to be insipid at best and evil at worst. I have faith that the vast majority of people I know realise this. However, much better sources of information and opinion are rarely mentioned alongside them whenever they are reported (strangely enough). It took me longer than it should have to find the useful ones. I would recommend that anyone seriously interested in this subject looks at the work of Selina Todd and Johnathan Rose for historical context, as well as the classic work of EP Thompson. Paul Mason, James Bloodworth, and Tony Sewell should be considered for society and economics. Denis Sewell has written some interesting theory on how biological science is sometimes misused to justify class stereotypes, leading on from the American biologist Stephen Jay Gould. Stuart Marconie, Alan Bennett, and Rhian Lucy-Cosslett represent some of the best, accessible voices in broadcast media, with particular reference to Rhian on disability. Social class describes the different "layers" that exist in society. These "layers," or classes in society, are a division that civilization has been running on ever since the beginning of mankind. In most modern societies, our system of social class division is one of opportunity. We experience a good deal of social mobility, where people through generations or in their own lifetime can move up or down the social scale. The idea of social inequality dates back since the time of our founding fathers. The mistreatment and unlawful equality and opportunity that these foreigners received became embedded into our history—this endless list includes, just to name a few, the Irish, Chinese, Jews, and most notably the African Americans (Blacks), who became slaves to the American people. The circumstances for one’s livelihood can range widely. Those who live in a rather unfortunate living scenario already don’t start off with the best opportunities in life. It is likely for them to stay in the class their whole life, or even end up worse off than in early life. For just about everyone, they don’t wish to stay in these conditions, although, it can be difficult or even impossible for some to leave their current social class. The reason these people have a need to move up in life is commonly because of the home life. The home life can be anything from divorced parents to abuse, or never having enough money to live comfortably. These reasons can leave drastic and traumatic scars on the mental and emotional states of young children.
