Throughout my life, adults have encouraged me to do well in school. However, on the first day of EN 100 it terrified me, as I did not know if I was going to be able handle a college class. I have heard of horrific tails about this class. Long papers and low grades seemed to be the stigma. Writing is not one of my strong suits, and to enroll into a college writing class was a death sentence for my GPA. I was beyond nervous, when I first started this semester. Large amounts of pressure to succeed in this class rested on my shoulders. However, I did not know if I was able to handle the hard work I have been previously informed about. Within the first few days, I slowly realized what this class was all about and prior worries had begun to melt away. I learned that I can control when to work on an assignment, throughout the week. This was beneficial, because it showed me time management skills. Furthermore, this class also has given me a sense of preparedness for college.
While writing the three assigned, I had faced major obstacles to overcome. These challenges were difficult to fix; however, after a vast amount of editing and revising, I was able to correct these mistakes. During the process of writing the literacy narrative, I had a lack of “show, don’t tell” properties. After learned how to properly incorporate this property, I was faced with a new problem in the observational essay. Developing a complex thesis seemed to be an impossible feat, at the time. Once I had an
I have been a student at San Jose States University for second years, English 1A was my first regular English class, and over the course of my stay I have grown and learned a lot. As Hospitality major, I do not know whether need my writing skills for future job, but I know the great experience in English 1A class would help me to improve all my writing weakness.
Chapter 2 of Successful College Writing written by Kathleen McWhorter focused on several different points. However, the main core of the chapter is mostly focused* on college writing and what is expected of it. It mentions* how college introduces you to new forms of writing, and also using sources to support your information and arguments in your essays. This chapter not only mentions the new writing styles you will experience, but also how to be successful in them by giving you helpful tips and aiding you in figuring out your learning style.
Think about your experiences of writing at college. Which types of assignments have you found helpful in strengthening your writing skills? Where do you want to improve your writing? What’s the most useful advice you’re received that’s helped you improve your writing. Be as specific as possible.
Writing can be a daunting task for students in any grade. Teachers have to implement new basic components for those struggling to write. Finding new methods and being able to execute them requires teachers to design lesson plans that help
When I graduated high school, I already knew that I wanted to attend college other than going to the work force. I heard stories about college being fun and it is one of the greatest accomplishment a person can achieve. So, I began college right after high school. As I entered college, I learned that I will have to focus more on writing papers than having fun. In high school my teachers did not prepare me for college essays. I feel like I learned a lot more failing on my college writing assignment than passing on the essays in high school. Well now I have approached the end of the semester of college, and I am exhausted from the constant writing assignments. Although the assignments were difficult like I said it was also helpful. Each assignment helped me in different ways. The assignments helped me improved with my grammar, time management, and how to process before I begin writing. In English 1010 I had different types of writing assignments. I had to write a literacy narrative paper, analysis paper, research paper, and lastly an autoethnography paper which I am doing now. An autoethnography is when the author uses self reflects to write about their experiences about writing a paper. English is not the only subject that I had writing assignments in. I also had to write assignment in my business class. My English teacher had informed me that I will have to do an autoethnography. So, I used my paper in my business class to reflect on how I write by
A community college is a great stepping stone for students who are on a budget and plan to obtain a degree higher than an Associates. As my career choice, Nurse Practitioner, requires a Master’s degree I am looking at many more years of classes and a lot more financial burden than that of an a registered nurse at the Associate degree level. In this paper I will explain why I have decided to take this course now, what my expectations are of this course, what I hope to gain from the experience, what I would like to read and write about based on my career path, and what some possible issues associated with my chosen career path are.
Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned so much about writing. I used to think writing was my best skill in terms of school, but after taking this course, I realized I have a lot to learn still. In high school English was always my highest grade because of my writing, my writing in my SAT scores was always the highest, and last semester in ENGL 1301, I got a high A in the course. But this course has challenged me as a writer to think outside of the box and be more academically smarter in terms of writing. The journals have helped me write about things that we like more than the other assignments because it gives us more freedom and flexibility about what we can write about. These journals are being used as a tool as practice
At the beginning of the term, I came into this class not feeling very confident about my writing. I had taken writing classes in the past, but none to the extent of a college level writing course. One of the skills that I found I lacked the most was my vocabulary. While my writing structure was often not a problem my writing did not sound as sophisticated as it could be. I occasionally used a thesaurus but this would often cause problems as sometimes the words would not quite agree with the meaning of my sentence. Throughout the term the one thing that helped me the most with this problem were the workshops. As my peers corrected my paper they helped me to come up with more intelligent words to get my point across to the reader. I believe that without the inclusion of these workshops my essays would not have been as cleanly written.
This is the second writing course I’ve taken in college, and it has ultimately helped with my writing abilities. Something significant that I have learned throughout this course, which I didn’t previously know, is the complete writing process. I was unaware of the distancing period. This certainly helped give me a renewed outlook of what I was trying to accomplish in my essays. Similarly, this course has brought to my attention revising resources I was unaware of. I found the smarthinking website to be very useful in completing my essays, and I know it will be beneficial for future
Since I can remember I have always loved to write. When I first took college composition I it was so fun and I loved everything I learned in that class. It was so long ago so I don’t really remember everything that I learned but for the most part, I remember being able to pick a topic and write about that one topic throughout the semester. There are three aspects of my writing that I would like to improve which are tone, grammar, and style. I always write in the sarcastic tone. I would love to learn how to write in a different tone such as disapproving, critical, pleading, humorous etc. I would struggle with grammar because I'm always the type of person to do things fast. I would free write and I would write so fast that sometimes I do mistakenly
I have definitely learned a lot more from College Writing II than I thought I would have. When this class started, I was not excited, because I have never liked writing, and felt that I was not very good at it. Now it’s coming to an end and fast. I always enjoyed coming to class because it went by quickly and was never dull. It started with free writes to help with our fluency, to class discussions, peer editing, and having Dr. White revise our essays. All these of have helped me with the writing process and becoming a better writer.
At the beginning of the class this year, I didn’t expect o to well right off the bat of the college level writing course because I had always struggled with English in middle school through high school. To my surprise though, I have learned many things this semester and have already used some of these skills in other papers in other classes I had. Thanks to the help of Sue Oakes, I can now say proudly that I can actually write a decent paper and feel rather confident about it.
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
When I began taking English 1101 I was confident in my writing. I thought my writing was good and would at least get me a “B” at the collegiate level. But I was so wrong, the first college paper I wrote was a disaster. My grade was far from a “B.” In high school I could procrastinate and do papers the night or two before they are due. That would be the biggest mistake I would make upon entering college. I received a 69.5 on my first paper, “C” if you were to round and “D” if you kept the grade as is. After this paper I seen how Writing a paper the night before caused me to have too many unnecessary errors. The main error or problem I missed was I failed to make the essay personal. Again because I waited so late to do the paper, I misunderstood the directions which not only caused me to do the assignment wrong but also do it with low efficiency. Aside from doing the paper last minute, I also had some flaws or weaknesses in my writing to hurt the overall grade of my paper.
Teaching literature is an exciting time in any classroom. New Zealand Government (n.d.) reports “New Zealand children rank relatively highly on the international literacy scales”. This shows that New Zealanders value their literacy abilities, and work hard to upkeep our reputation. As a teacher, teaching writing can be very difficult, but also very rewarding. With the aid of purpose, audience and form we can guide our students in to knowing what they are writing about and whom it is for. Motivation and planning inspires students to write their very best work every time. And re-crafting gives students the opportunities to perfect their work to a standard that they are proud of.
