Yoko Ono is a conceptual artist, performer, singer, film-maker and peace activist, and Japanese multimedia artist. She is known for avant-garde and expressive pieces. Her work spans countless mediums. The following are works that highlight Ono’s array of mediums both independently and collaborative.

Sherman grew up in a large family that did not have any interest in art. Her knowledge of art growing up was very minimal until she went to college. She, then, started to paint. She quickly realized she did not like painting because of the lack of intimacy or recreation of a particular setting. She did, however love photography and started pursued an interest in that.

Rock and roll reflected the social and cultural shifts that were occurring in American society after World War II, and music continues to reflect society and popular culture today. Rock and roll of the 1950s marked the shift of dominant musical influences from European (melodic) to African American music (rhythmic).
Rock and Roll Similar to the popularity of the electronic dance music, in the 1970s the disco movement challenged Rock and Roll place in the media. Disco music first became popular in the 1970s club scene and reached its peak popularity after the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. During this time, many Rock fans despised the disco craze because of social issues. One of the problem Rock fans had with disco is that lots of people believed that disco music was “gay” music. Another factor that made disco music unappealing to Rock and Roll fans, was the fact that it allowed women to break through the music scene.
Cindy Sherman is a very influential contemporary artist. During art school, Sherman was a painter. But in the late 1970’s, she began her photography career. Using herself as her model, Sherman took on roles that questioned the influence that mass media has over individuals. The majority of her art work targets and calls into question female stereotypes from the past and the present.
Yoko Ono took this process of making artwork and made a whole exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia. She named this exhibition “War Is Over (If you want it)”. Almost all of the exhibits were intended for people to participate in. The whole exhibition was filled with installation pieces and conceptual art. The first piece was called “Play It By Trust” that consisted of brightly lit tables, surrounded by two minimalist chairs, and ontop of the tables sat chess games to play with. All of the chess pieces were white. The instructions were to play a game with a friend or stranger while remembering which pieces belonged to whom (Allen). Another piece was called “My Mommy is Beautiful.” Yoko Ono wanted the audience to write a note directed towards or about their mother onto a piece of paper and plaster them all over a designated
Yoko Ono is one the most influential performance, multi media and avante guarde artist of the 20th century who`s work has been over shadowed by her personnel life. Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1933 Ono attended the prestigious Gakushuin Unversity, while here her family moved to America to escape the war.Art appealed to Yoko `shortly after turning twenty years old, Yoko Ono discovered art out of necessity. “Art is a means of survival,”`1 she discovered this living through WWII where Yoko and her siblings would imagine all the foods they could not possess,this gave them hope in the bleakness and became the purpose of much of her art. It was also the inspiration for her earliest performance piece Lighting Piece (1955).
