The harlem renaissance was a period of time after World War I where the African American culture changed drastically. There was a change in music with the rising jazz genre. There was also a large movement in the 1920’s from the south east to the north called the great migration. This brought the black culture to the dense american cities where many people embraced it and evolved it in there own way. This movement also brought a change in writing and poetry styles. This new media brought the issues of racism to many people's view as well as many other issues that African Americans have been dealing with for years. The short story “How it Feels to be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston and the song “I am not my Hair” by India Arie both use metaphors and rhythm to display how appearance affects your social status. …show more content…

Many writers took on this large issue. An example of appearance affecting status can be found in a metaphor. The quote, “Among the thousand white persons, I am a dark rock surged upon, and overswept, but through it all, I remain myself.” (Zora Hurston) displays her feelings about being in a mostly white community. This mainly describes how you have to push through the difference and have it not affect you like it did for her. This compares her to a rock in the ocean. The rock symbolizes the test of time and staying still through the erosion and heavy waves. She is trying to not let her skin color or appearance let her change so she is planting her feet and not letting any outside person change her thought or
