The Transcendentalists, Emerson and Thoreau, believed in a philosophy that valued life and recognized the importance of the human person. They understood that every person has worth and a part to contribute to the world. Abortion, the intended killing of a human life, goes against everything these great men practiced and believed. Man can comprehend this through the use of our own individual intuition and moral courage. The term Transcendentalist describes a group of people who came up with a new approach to solve the conflicts of life. Science can work only in the testable world and not say what rights humans should be given. People in the medical field always talk about how the baby, while still in the mother’s womb is considered a potential life. Some doctors call it “potential” to make it seem that it not yet a human life, and not a unique person. We tell ourselves this so that we do not have to live with the guilt of murdering another human being. Many people talk about the rights of the women, but what about the right of a child to a full life. Is Personhood is determined by man’s ability to bestow it, or are we separating humanity from the person? Many studies have estimated since the legalization of abortion in Roe vs. Wade case of 1973, that over fifty-five million babies have been killed. Emerson and Thoreau would say that we can know that abortion is wrong through the use of intuition. Every human being deep down in their spiritual soul knows the difference between what is good and what is evil, but can we choose the make a decision between what is right and what is easy. Sometimes an individuals must not conform to what the general population of society is doing, but rise above it to set new standards. More people need to speak out about the destruction of this procedure and find ways that we can avoid having to make this terrible choice.
