Give a Few Examples of Biomes.

Answer – Biome examples include the savannas, tropical rainforests, tundra, and deserts, among others.

Explanation:

The biomes of the world are grouped into 5 main types: grassland, forest, desert, tundra, and aquatic biomes. Each of these may be further categorized into more biomes.

The savannas are a type of grassland biome. Also known as tropical grasslands, they occur abundantly in Africa as well as some parts of Central and South America, South Asia, and Australia. Hot and dry conditions prevail in this region, primarily allowing the growth of tall grasses with scattered trees. The savannas have abundant wildlife, ranging from herbivorous elephants and zebras to carnivorous lions and cheetahs.

Similar to tropical grasslands, there exist tropical rainforests, which are a type of forest biome. As the name suggests, they occur between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and receive abundant rainfall all through the year; they are also regions of high temperature. Tropical rainforests have great species richness and serve as home to tens of thousands of plant and animal species.

Tundra is the coldest of all biomes (with temperatures as low as –34° C in winters). It is characterized by minimal precipitation, short growing seasons, and limited biodiversity. Most plants and animals in this region need special adaptations to survive. The tundra biome can be further grouped into arctic tundra (around the arctic circle) and alpine tundra (atop mountains throughout the world).

Deserts occur primarily in low latitude regions and are the driest of all biomes, receiving less than 50 cm of rainfall each year. Their daily temperatures fluctuate considerably with hot days and cold nights. Due to the extreme climate, deserts are suited largely for specialized vegetation like cacti and animals like reptiles. This biome may be further classified into hot and dry, semiarid, coastal, and cold deserts.
