How Many Bones Are in the Spine?

Answer – There are 33 bones in the spine.

Explanation:

The spine, or the backbone, is the structural support system of the human body. It helps one maintain good posture while sitting, standing, and walking in addition to flexibility while bending and twisting. It also safeguards the nerves and spinal cord.

At birth, there are 33 small bones, or vertebrae, stacked one on top of the other in the spine. However, during growth and development, some bones toward the lower end merge and result in a total of 26 vertebrae.

The vertebrae can be grouped into 5 spine segments from top to bottom.

1. Cervical: Includes the 7 vertebrae (labeled C1 to C7) in the neck

2. Thoracic: Comprises the 12 vertebrae (labeled T1 to T12) that connect to the rib cage

3. Lumbar: Includes the 5 vertebrae (labeled L1 to L5) that make up the bottom part of the spine

4. Sacral: Comprises the 5 vertebrae (labeled S1 to S5) that fuse together in the fetal stage to form one triangle-shaped bone

5. Coccygeal: Includes the 4 vertebrae that fuse together to form a single bone at the bottom of the spine

Consecutive vertebrae are further separated by cartilage-containing facet joints, which limit friction between the bones.
