How Many Feet are in a Mile?

Answer – There are 5,280 feet in one mile.

Explanation:

Both units, feet and miles, are a part of the British Imperial and US customary systems of measurements. They are used to measure length.

Both these units also originated in Roman times. While one foot was roughly equal to the average length of a person’s foot, a mile was decided to be equal to a thousand paces, one pace itself consisting of 5 feet. Therefore, for the Romans, one mile was equal to 5,000 feet.

However, in the 16th century, the British Parliament voted to standardize these units of measurement in terms other than variable ones such as handspans and feet (the lengths of which differ from person to person). The length of one mile was set at equal to 8 furlongs (a unit now rarely used).

The length of one furlong had been set at 660 feet. Therefore, 8 furlongs equal 5,280 feet.

Therefore, the conversion of feet to miles is as below:

1 furlong = 660 feet

1 mile = 8 furlongs = 8×660 feet = 5,280 feet
