What are Sediments?

Answer – Sediments are particles of rock, minerals, organic matter and sand that are moved from one region to another by wind, water and other agents.

Explanation:

Erosion is the process through which rocks are broken down and transported away. A product of this process is sediment. Sediment is the collection of particles of rocks of minerals from larger ones that gets carried away. The size of these particles ranges from fairly large boulders to fine sand and silt. Sometimes it also includes organic matter such as remains from plants and animals.

Sediments get carried away by wind, water or even glaciers from their points of origin to entirely new locations. Frequently, they carry nutrients that can enrich the land they are deposited at.

When sediments get collected into one area and subjected to compression over time, they harden and compact into rocks called sedimentary rocks.
