What Are Some Examples of Biotic Factors?

Answer – Biotic factor examples include plants, cattle, wolves, bears, humans, and bacteria, among others.

Explanation:

Any ecosystem’s functionality is decided by two types of factors: biotic and abiotic.

Biotic factors encompass all the living parts of an ecosystem. They comprise plants, animals, humans, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria. They are dependent on abiotic factors and vice versa. Any change in either through alteration or elimination impacts the entire ecosystem. Biotic factors can be grouped into 3 main categories:

1. Producers: Also known as autotrophs, these are involved in the production of food using abiotic factors like sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Plants, trees, and grass are all examples of biotic factors classified as producers.

2. Consumers: These depend on producers or other consumers for sustenance. They are also further grouped as:

  • herbivores if they depend on producers for food
  • carnivores if they feed on other consumers
  • omnivores if they consume both producers and other consumers

Examples of these biotic factors include herbivores like cows, buffaloes, rabbits, and squirrels; carnivores such as tigers, eagles, and wolves; omnivores like bears, raccoons, and humans.

3. Decomposers: These break down the chemicals generated by producers and consumers into less complex molecules. Some examples are earthworms, bacteria, and fungi.
