What is 0/0?

Answer – Zero divided by zero is undefined.

Explanation:

First, a decimal number close to zero, say 0.1, is considered and divided by itself.

 0.10.1 = 1

Now, two other decimal numbers even closer to zero, say 0.0001 and 0.0000001, are chosen and divided by themselves as well.

 0.00010.0001 = 1

 0.00000010.0000001 = 1

This shows that no matter how close a number tends to zero, dividing it by itself always gives the answer 1. Some may, therefore, be prompted to say that 00 could equal 1.

However, zero divided by any number besides itself is zero. Thus, 00.1 = 0, 00.0001 = 0, 00.0000001 = 0. This may lead some to believe that 00 could equal 0.

While both the above arguments are valid, they are inconsistent with all other known aspects of mathematics. Therefore, experts say that zero divided by zero is undefined or an indeterminate form.
