What is Secant Equal to?

Answer – Secant, or sec, equals the inverse of cosine.

Explanation:

The secant of an angle of a right triangle is found using any of these two methods:

1. Find the cosine of the angle. Then, find its reciprocal.

2. Calculate the ratio of the hypotenuse to the side adjacent to the angle.

Triangle ABC with hypotenuse b, opposite side a, and adjacent side C for angle A

In the above triangle, cos A is the ratio of the adjacent side c to the hypotenuse b.

cos A = cb

Sec A would then be the reciprocal of this—the ratio of the hypotenuse b to the adjacent side c.

sec A = bc
