What Kingdom Are Bacteria a Part of?

Answer – According to the 5-kingdom classification, bacteria are a part of Kingdom Monera. However, they may be grouped under Eubacteria as per the 6-kingdom classification.

Explanation:

All living beings are classified broadly into 5 kingdoms of life: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.

Monera includes all organisms with prokaryotic cells. They are single-celled, lack a distinct nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles, and have a cell wall. Prokaryotes belonging to Monera reproduce through binary fission. They are also among the oldest known beings on the planet. All bacteria are grouped under Kingdom Monera.

After extensive research though, scientists suggested dividing Monera into two new kingdoms: Archaebacteria and Eubacteria. While prokaryotes belonging to both kingdoms are similar in shape and appearance, they differ starkly in their biochemical composition.

Archaebacteria were originally thought to be bacteria. However, unlike bacteria, they possess the ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Thus, they are always found in inhospitable environments such as hot springs and hydrothermal vents.

Eubacteria, on the other hand, comprise all true bacteria. These are more complex in their organization than archaebacteria and include all helpful bacteria known to humans, such as those living in the gut. Most of these do not cause disease.
