Where Does Glycolysis Occur in a Cell?

Answer – Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell.

Explanation:

Glycolysis is a central metabolic pathway that is used by all cells for the oxidation of glucose to generate energy in the form of ATP. In this process, one molecule of glucose is oxidized to generate two pyruvate molecules (products of glycolysis).

Glucose + 2 NAD+ + 2 ADP + 2 Pi → 2 Pyruvate + 2 NADH + 2 H+ + 2 ATP + 2 H2O

The cytoplasm is a perfect site for glycolysis because the enzymes needed for this are located in the cytoplasm itself. Glucose is also available by diffusion within the cytoplasm. In addition, the energy released via glycolysis is used by cellular processes occurring within the cytoplasm.
