Question

Two long, straight wires are separated by 0.120 m. The wires carry currents of 6.1 A in opposite directions, as the drawing indicates. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at the points labeled (a) A and (b) B.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given :

distance between the wires, d=0.12 m

current in wires, I=6.1 A

distance of point B from each wire, r=0.06 m

distance of point A from wire 1, r1=0.120+0.030=0.15 m

distance of point A from wire 2, r2=0.03 m

Determine ;

magnitude of the net magnetic field at points -

(a) A

(b) B

Net magnetic field at any point can be determined as the resultant of the individual magnetic fields that are present there because the magnetic field is a vector quantity.

Direction of the magnetic field due to a wire can be determined by the right hand thumb rule.
