Question

Two pucks slide towards each other along the x-axis on a frictionless ice surface, as in the picture. Puck 1 has a mass of 0.100 kg and an initial velocity of 6.00 m/s to the right, and puck 2 has a mass of .0500 kg and an initial velocity of 18.00 m/s to the left. At some point they collide, and afterwards you measure puck 2 to be moving at a speed of 2.00 m/s in the positive x-direction.

a) If the system is defined to be puck 1, is the momentum of the system conserved during the process? Briefly explain why or why not.

b) If the system is defined to include both pucks, is the momentum of the system conserved during the process? Briefly explain why or why not.

c) Which puck, 1 or 2, experiences a greater magnitude force during the collision? Explain and/or show your work.

d) Find the velocity (speed and direction with respect to the positive x-axis) of puck 1 after the collision. Explain and /or show your work.
