Question

2.30 A cart is moved by the action of a high-speed jet as shown. If the cart moves on frictionless wheels, determine the initial acceleration of the cart (the mass of the water in the cart is negligible). The mass of the cart is lO slugs and the cart starts from rest. What equation governs the cart velocity Vc if the water collected in the cart is not neglected? A numerical solution using the computer could be developed.

Hint: Use Conservation of Mass to develop a differential equation for mass as a function of time, m(t). Use Conservation of Momentum to develop a differential equation for Vc. You must retain the inertial force term because the coordinate system is attached to the cart, and the cart is moving. You have 2 coupled differential equations that must be solved numerically. (The numerical solution is not a part of this problem, but will be provided!)
