Dielectric Constant Of Water
Water constitutes about 70% of earth. Some important distinguishing properties of water are high molar concentration, small dissociation constant and high dielectric constant.
Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance
An electrostatic force is a force caused by stationary electric charges /fields. The electrostatic force is caused by the transfer of electrons in conducting materials. Coulomb’s law determines the amount of force between two stationary, charged particles. The electric force is the force which acts between two stationary charges. It is also called Coulomb force.
#51: A parallel-plate capacitor is charged by a 12.0 V battery, then the battery is removed.
a. What is the potential difference between the plates after the
battery is disconnected?
b. What is the potential difference between the plates after a
sheet of Teflon is inserted between them?
Solution:-
1) The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is given by
C0 = ε0A/d
Here, ε0 = permittivity of free space
A = area of each plate
d = separation between the plates
2) The capacitance of parallel plate capacitor filled with dielectric, is given by
C' = Kε0A/d = KC0
Here, K = dielectric constant of inserted dielectric
3) The potential difference across the parallel plate capacitor , is given by
V0 = Q0/C0
Here, C0 = Capacitance of capacitor
Q0 = charge on the capacitor
and if an dielectric is inserted between the plates, then potential difference across the plates,will be
V' = Q0/C = Q0 /KC0 [ C = KC0 ]
V' = V0 /K
Here, V0 = potential difference across plates when no dielectric is inserted
V' = potential difference across the plates when a dielectric is inserted
K = dielectric constant
